Well, my fiance got a new job again, and unfortunately for her explorer, she only has a 5min. drive to work, so its pretty much never gonna get up to full temp. Its a 96 with the 4.0 ohv and 105,000miles on it. I was running just conventional in it, but I'm wondering if I should switch to synthetic now? I was looking at the Rotella T5 semi-syn. 10w30, would that be a good one? Its hard to beat for the price at walmart.

I would use the Rotella T 10w30, that sounds like a great choice to me. Wal-Marts around here don't carry it, so I have to get it from Menard's.
Dino at 3,000 miles + a 15+ mile Saturday run every week or two.
Isn't the Explorer specked for 5w-20? If so, I say Motorcraft 5w-20 semi-synthetic. It's a quality oil at a good price. Follow the OLM if it has one, if you're really worried, cut it short and change it sooner but use it for a guide of some sort

Well, thanks for the input guys. I have some GC to use up first, but I had originally planned on sticking with valvoline maxlife afterwards. Now that she changed jobs, I figure I should run something a little better to help fight sludge and acid build up. I hadn't really given PP any thought as i was trying to stay in the conventional or semi synthetic-synthetic areas for cost reasons, but PP isn't really that much more I guess. Whats the general concensous on OCI? 3,000miles? 5,000miles? She generally makes some longer runs on the weekends, but doesn't get out on the highway very often. and shes the type to put it in gear and go before the poor thing even has a chance to build oil pressure. I figured a diesel/gas oil like the Rotella T5 would stand up to the abuse pretty good, and was pretty descent price wise. PP might be another option though.
kendall gt1 is only 5 a quart if your wallet is tight and is fully synthetic.
