I think many people are over analyzing this. PP already had some strong brand recognition. Nothing like M1, but growing and fairly well established. Putting another synthetic oil next to PP, along with more %%%% sludge claims, is just overkill. As a result, cannibalization will occur. Time will tell if Ultra makes it. I think it would have been better to just upgrade PP.

Oh, I agree 100% and I think all of the oil companies are guilty of this. Just how many different types of oil do we need. In my opinion just two, conventional and synthetic. We don't need all these special oils.
Synthetic oil sales #1 Mobil #2 Valvoline #3 Castrol. Conv. oil sales #1 Sopus group #2 Valvoline 3 # Castrol #4 Havoline. Havoline was #3 until last year. Chevron has drop the ball on marketing Havoline ,its a shame because its such a great product. These are USA sales figures.

Havoline seems to be less and less common in these parts. Wal-Marts used to carry Chevron conventional maybe 5-10 years ago, but now it's only available in HDEO 15w40. It's a shame because I used Havoline a few times as a bargain oil in something older with good results...
I am very surprised with the synthetic figures for Valvoline. Where did you get those numbers?

I personally don't think this has anything to do with it. Pennzoil is still the number one selling oil in North America. Shell wants everything to be as close to the same world wide as it can. In the rest of the world they have Helix Ultra, so in North America they wanted it to be Pennzoil Ultra. They just need one synthetic oil.
Honestly I think M1 is the number one selling oil in North America. If you go to Pennzoil site, they take the claim and vice versa with M1. I can't actually find any hard facts to support either claim. I personally think that M1 is more popular than Pennzoil throughout the US.

Let me be more clear. The Pennzoil brand is the number one selling motor oil in North America and Mobil 1 is the number one selling Synthetic Oil in most of the world. Conventional Mobil oils are way down on the list in North America.
This is very true. That why I stated M1 instead of regular Mobil conventional. Heck they had to kill MC7.5k because people wasn't buying it at all.

Wow, SOPUS isn't even in the top three in synthetic oil sales!?! No wonder Ultra is collecting dust and being discounted already. They shot themselves in the foot with that horrible decision to have two products out at the same time.
I also can't believe Mobil conventional doesn't even rank in the top 4! Well I will continue to use that especially after reading that new sherrif thread.

Seems like PP is now a decent seller. Nobody bought the older Pennzoil Synthetic.
I went to Walmart, which is against my better judgment, to see if I could find a deal on PU. Nope it was $28. I left empty handed and went to AZ.

Got my 5 qt jug of Ultra from Walmart - not on clearance $28. Always been a content Mobil 1 user but wanted to try something else for a 2008 Honda Odyssey I just got. I was impressed by the claims of how clean Ultra keeps the engine. Back in the day when I was in engineering school we visited a Texaco Oil plant where we toured the facility and were shown how they test oils in different engines to see what works etc. Seen some cruded up/blown up engine's from test oils that didn't work so well. I will say from that experience it is very difficult to develop an oil formula that can do what Ultra claims. Anyway, the 5w-20 Ultra oil change made my Odyssey run noticeably smoother. I also noticed an increase in acceleration and power. I have never experienced such a dramatic change in performance from an oil change. Good stuff. As a note, the last oil change was performed by the Honda dealer just before they sold me the car. I would imagine they used conventional motor oil. I'm going to try Ultra on my 2003 Bonneville with the 3800 engine next. I'm not expecting that big a difference in performance on the 3800 because I have a lot of experience changing the oil in that car with over 200,000 miles on it. It just runs great on anything you put in it.
Made the change to PU today (5W-20) in my 07 Honda Odyssey EX-L. I have been running synthetic since it hit 5k, and now it has 52,432 mi and the engine is very clean (been running mostly PP, but did one with Castrol Syntec and one, most recent, with Valvoline Syn power). I noticed the PU looked a bit lighter in color out of the bottle. The engine seemed a bit quiter with it. Been very pleased with Pennzoil Platinum and I'm certain the Ultra will be good. I've seen the Virgin TBN and it looks like a very robust oil.
