Getting ready to change the oil in both Honda Elements tomorrow and was going to Walmart to get some Platinum. My neighbor told me he thought he saw some of the Ultra there so I was very excited. Sure enough when I get there, there is no Ultra to be found where all the oil is. Since we are in Mobil 1 heaven the shelves are full of every kind of Mobil 1 they make. So I grabbed two of the 5-quarts of Platinum and headed to the counter (It was $20.50 each). I asked the guy why this particular Walmart did not carry the Ultra and he basically said because most folks around here by Mobil 1. Then he said we do have some Ultra on the clearance rack two isles over. So I walk over there and there it is, three 10w30, four 5w30, and two 5W-20. I asked if they had any more in the back and he said they had eight more of the 5W-20. I bought all ten of them for a marked down price of $15.00 each.

I'm a happy camper and I have enough Ultra to last me for a while.

Good deal. Too bad Ultra isn't selling that well. Completely stupid idea to keep both synthetics. They should have just upgraded PP. Platinum already has some name recognition. Kind of a reverse cannibalization going on possibly.

Even if they weren't selling well, i think it's too soon to be putting them out on clearance...

I haven't even seen Ultra yet here in Canada
=(

But hey, congrats on the purchase! Sounds like you will be well served!

Shoot, when Edge came out it was on clearance in like a month at my local Walmart. Nice grab Johnny!

Yeah, this is eerily similar to how Castrol's story has gone (Syntec, Edge, etc). I hope they start clearancing Ultra at my Walmart. They start doing that, and I'll buy a bunch for the Camry...

Same here my local wal-mart told me couple months back that Ultra will be arriving in may,so far nothing.

I am strongly considering Ultra for our Accents. As much as I hate Consumer Discount Shopping [censored] (AKA The Evil Empire) I may need to head over there.

Hey. All it really cost them was another run of bottle labels and a little extra detergent, right? And in return they get the marketing swell of a "new product". ;-)

Wow. I just returned a brick of PP from the stash with the intent of buying some Ultra. I got $37 for the six-pack, but after considering how much stash I have skipped the oil purchase.

However at $15/jug, I would have bought ten too!

It's fitting that Johnny, of all people, got the big score.

The four Walmarts within 60 miles of my house don't have it on sale, just the one here in Wausau. This part of WI is a stronghold for Mobil 1. The only other synthetics with any real presence are the Pennzoil Platinum and Castrol Syntec. No Quaker State synthetics on the shelves, other than some quarts, and no Valvoline synthetics, other that some quarts. When you round the corner in to the oil section it looks like you entered a Mobil 1 warehouse.

Same with the WMs here.

Edge only made it onto Cdn shelves here about 2-3 months ago, and I'm not sure its selling well.

Also, Mobil was 'supposed' to start selling the AFE line of oils up here like a year ago. Nada so far.

I'm not sure we're going to see Ultra up here for a while - market is pretty saturated, and less people use it up he b/c it's a lot more expensive.

The Walmart near me NEVER discounts oil, unless it's their rollback prices. They'll let it sit on the self at full price or it just disappears off the shelf never to be seen again. They have no bargin discountined bins for anything in the store. They also have no real competition anywhere near them. The next closest Walmart, 20 miles away does the same thing. Maybe it's Walmart in northwestern NJ.
