Hey all, new to the forums.

Just purchased a 2003 Jeep Liberty Renegade 3.7L V6, it has 228,000 miles. The manual recommends 3,000 mile oil changes, and asks for 5W-30 or 10W-30 that is API certified and meets MS-6395 specifications. I was wondering, if I were to use a full synthetic oil, would I still have to follow that 3,000 interval recommendation or could I extend it?

With 228K mile on it I wouldn't lose any sleep running a good synthetic 5,000 miles in it.

The 2006 Commander in my sig. with the 3.7 V6 has been fed a steady diet of Synthetic (Pennzoil, Mobil-One) 5W30 Oil at 6000 mile intervals with no issues...…..just saying!

My 2007 liberty manual says 3000 mile severe, 6000 mile normal oci on 5w-20. I use synthetic 0w-20 at 6,000.

Your Jeep calls for 6,000 mile oil changes, unless you do extreme idling, towing, or operating in dusty conditions.

I was under the impression it was 3,000 since it says that most follow schedule B, but since most of my driving is about 160-180 miles a week on the highway, I guess I can follow the schedule A, however I live in south Texas so it does get pretty hot

I think if the automaker was concerned about going 5000, 6000 miles they wouldn't even list that option. They'd just play it safe and say 3000 miles, no exceptions. Even if yours was even close to "severe" service, running synthetic certainly allows longer intervals.

I've often wondered if the oil manufacturers have an u written guideline for synthetic intervals based on the auto makers conventional interval. They'd have to say at least 1.5x longer or more likely 2x longer.

When looking at BITOG on my phone the Signatures don't show up, just on the PC. If I request the desktop site from my phone it shows up so I think it's in the UBB coding of this forum not to show it on smaller screen devices like phones.

Put any walmart avaialble synthetic in there and run to 6k miles. You will be assamed to take it out that soon when you can clearly see through it (maple pancake syrup color). The first few changes may get dark fast as the synthetic cleans the varnish and sludge left by the conventional. After three ocis it will look very good on the stick at 6k.

IMO 3k is a bit short, especially with mostly highway. Agree with StevieC about getting a UOA to be sure but my estimate is 6k easy and probably more.

Am currently doing a 10k run in the wife's Liberty with Amsoil....about 1/2 way there so stay tuned for that UOA.

I would run the cheapest API "SN" rated 5W-30 that money can buy in that 228,000 mile jeep and not waste my money on anything more than whatever was cheapest.
