2.4L Multi -Air. I had posted some details on my FIL's Renegade in other threads. Motor was burning a lot of oil and then had pressure issues (5 psi idle, 20 psi at 2k). All recalls had been done etc. Past changes were a lot of dealer and indy shop. Dealer replaced the motor under extended warranty at 82,700 with scoring noted in all cylinders. New motor has a 2 year/unlimited mileage warranty, rest of vehicle is out of warranty.

Oil change light just came on with 4700 miles on it. I added 1/2 qt of oil about 2 weeks on new motor and has stayed full since.

Oil spec is 0W-20 with MS-6395 so many choices to meet that. I'll probably stick with the 0W-20 just to have the documentation for the next 2 years if he keeps it that long. I really do want to use more of a 5W-30, maybe Euro in it if it will help with preventing this new motor from doing the same thing. A little extra protection, thickie love.

It is being checked more frequently than the old one. No clue what his indy used for oil or what dealer was doing. I do know that his indy had done a couple changes and only used 5qts not the 5.5qts it calls for and low oil came on not long after but that was all old motor.

I'm very tempted to start this out on the VRP 0W-20 and just go with that to hopefully keep rings clean. I can order the Havoline Pro DS 0W-20 6qt box and have at WM in 2 days.

Other potential- QSUP (thought it used be QSUD?), M1 AFE, M1 EP, PP, Castrol Edge AFS all options. I'll skip the ST and Costco even though they would probably be fine also. Last couple decades has mostly been M1 or PP for me, way older was QS but mostly dino iirc.

I need to check his manual to see if it lists the severe use or other options. His is mostly all around town short trips but does get to temperature even if it's idling while reads the paper.

I'm not doing extended OCI's on it and will use easy commercially available mostly from WM so no HPL, Amsoil or other.

Thoughts from the BITOG crowd?

VRP 5w30 and being it's the 1st oil change with it, shorten the OCI to 4k.

Thoughts on why reducing to 4k? There is no oil life monitor in it that you can see for XX% left. It just kind of picks when to send the message based on driving conditions it has seen. The manual says to get it changed I think within 300 miles. FIL drives it and I do have window stickers I can put on with whatever date and mileage. Hopefully he actually pays attention to it. This is man who puts notes by his speedometer the says "Don't Speed" and "STOP at stop signs" and only because local LE likes to wait by all of them around the neighborhood. The dash light at least turns on everytime you start until you change it.

I know shorter OCI for the potential contaminations. According to what I read it is also MPI not GDI. Motor Reviewer

Except for some glittery stuff I don't expect much other stuff to clean out that may clog a filter. It was a long block replacement with only 4700 miles on it currently.

Wife has 2016 Patriot 2.4; but not Multiair. It has gotten both 0W-20 and 5W-20, and it doesn’t burn/use a drop of oil, even with all short trip driving and idling,
It is a bit noisy at start up with valvetrain noise, and at some point I am going to try thicker oil to see if it goes away. It got much less on Castrol GTX HM 5W-20, which is in it now.

Checking the manual today doesn't mention any other viscosities for hot weather/towing etc. It does say that if off road, dusty or low RPM (which he really is around town) to make it 4k OCI. I do really want to go to the 5W-30, might just need to some purchases for documents for next 2 years in case of anything stupid. I have multiple vehicles that call for 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30.

i have yet to figure out a way to play gasoline flute on 87 isolated with that type. difficult enough when every cylinder's valve looks like trumpet 2 on mine. lmao

check out Wall Mart, they have lots of 5w-30 synthetic oils that would be fine in your jeep, myself i prefer the Valvoline ep is good ,and Fram ultra filter ,,you should be fine at 5 thousand oci,,

Without knowing what gunk and how much is in the engine, always best to play it safe with this engine cleaning oil and change it a little earlier than in the past. Better safe than unsafe. Engines are expensive to replace or overhaul, or take chances with your luck and just keep rolling the dice..
