My E90 got hit while parked

Y'all:

I was up in the Bay Area for business and had a late breakfast at the Los Gatos Cafe "Uptown", Sue's and my favorite breakfast place in our old stomping grounds up there.

While walking across the parking lot after breakfast I heard a car alarm screeching. As I approached the E90 I noticed it was cocked at an angle inside the parking space, when I had parked it straight in. You can see in the picture how the impact moved the car about 18 inches forward and sideways. Front wheels got knocked to the right too. They may not have been 100% straight when I parked, but they weren't turned that far to the right.

Some guy in a stake bed work truck hit it while making a U-turn around my car, which was parked in an empty portion of the lot. Props to him for not fleeing the scene. He was courteous and polite, and I could tell he really felt bad about what happened. We exchanged info. While he was speaking to his boss I asked if I could talk to him. I did and gave the guy props for being honest and cooperative.

He snagged the front crash beam, which pulled down the left headlight. The plastic super structure below the headlight is crushed. Bummer too the fender got hit. Besides the leading edge there is a bulge at the 1 o'clock position over the wheel well opening. The reinforcement crease inside the fender lip is dimpled and folded over, which seems to me will be a weak spot, unless they replace the fender.

You know, when leaving this morning I walked into the garage with my E46 key, thinking I was going to take that. But as I approached I changed my mind and took the E90 instead. I would have been REALLY unhappy had the E46 gotten hit.

You guys know how I take car of my cars! I'm not happy about it but stuff happens. I'm guessing about $5K worth.

I'm not a BMW guy but this is painful to see. As a import fan this is extremely painful to see. My heart goes out to you. I just found out BMW made a M8 V12 and fell in love. May the elves in the black forest Restore this masterpiece to its intended form once again.

Bad bad bad deal there man…

Feel bad for ya..

Totaled ? Yeah a very real possibility.

However…. On the positive side…

If there is NO FRAME damage no change in that geometry… Then a repair is just limited to suspension parts, front end bumper, radiator and possibly left front brakes, wheel and or any other left side damage.

Which will be pricey. But no frame damage means that the real original frame of the car is intact and straight…. Then it’s all good at the end of the day.

Frame damage can be corrected…Potentially … But it could be very expensive to repair properly. I know certain cars have a recertification process to go through if a car of theirs needs the frame to be straightened out and certified as such after the work is done.

OMG Scott, I had a sinking feeling of dread when I logged on and saw this post. I would have been physically sick though, had it been the E46. I was hoping for just the typical parking lot ding, but it looks substantially more than that. The E90s are solid cars, but were designed to sacrifice more structure in a crash than the E46s were. I'm sure it was a ripple effect with the force and would not be surprised one bit if it was totaled due to claimed value. I'll echo some others and say let Hagerty put the stones to State Farm and hash it out. Thats what you pay them to do. In all my years of working collisions, State Farm is one of the worst with payout claims against them. A lot of big companies have taken a huge hit on their self-insured bankings due to weather related claims lately, and I believe SF is one of many above 100%. Its a big reason you see Jake (and Ahnold 😁) on TV a lot and why they try to nit pick every dime out of a repair claim.

Silver lining time. Neither you nor Sue were physically injured, you didn't see it happen before your eyes, and thank divine intervention that you didn't take the E46. Good luck brother, let us know how it works out.

Did you park crooked like that or did the vehicle get moved from the collision?

A Sad day. that looks like 5k damage on a chevy.. probably hit 10k+ on the BMW. If its "totaled" would you fix it?
I'm not sure what I'll do. The car is (was) in virtually perfect condition, including everything mechanical. It hasn't spent more than 30 days parked outside at night, those days being when we took it on a road trip somewhere. It was never used to drive to work so it never baked in a parking lot all day. Pretty much the only time it was outside was when it was being driven.

Sooooo sorry to see and hear that!!!

Some idiot with a trailer ball on backed into my accord bumper and put a hole in it. Small beans compared to what the idiot did to your car. Wow. So sorry.

My neighbor has collector cars, really nice stuff he's had rebuilt and/or refurbished. He's says they might total it. I have it insured with Hagerty for $15k. Suppose State Farm (insurance of guy who hit me) pays only $8k. Wouldn't Hagerty make up the difference?

I can't imagine it being totaled for this, but I'm no expert in body work costs.

Let's hope not. It's a really nice car that's been treated exceptionally well; and it has complete, detailed maintenance and repair documentation since day 1.

I’m surprised that Haggerty would insure it. American collectors wouldn’t insure my 2011 135i when I pursued it earlier this year.

I would have Haggerty pursue State Farm. There’s a reason why you have stated value insurance. I’d also pursue diminished value.

And SF will probably attempt to steer you to a direct pay shop, and then haggle with labor rates if you go anywhere else. Realize that these thieves’ “proprietary” rates are their agreed to rates for direct repair shops and not actually the industry average.

Wow! That a real bummer as the vehicle looks to be in immaculate state. I hope the insurance does right by you and fixes it properly instead of totaling it.
No airbags deployed so there is a good chance they will fix it or at least write you a check for it, which would be my preferred choice IMO.

Use Hagerty vs. the other guys insurance, they will go after them for the full value you are insured for ($15K). Remember, you can always "buy it back" and fix it...so they would give you 15 but you can take less (maybe 10?) and get the car and find a place to do the work per how you want it done.
