Kia and Honda are on my radar.

But, so are Chevy and Ford....

I'd hang out until the Cruze and new Focus come out... They should shake up the market a bit. But the Civic is a good car, though a bit too much road noise for me (even compared to my cavalier)

Yeah, that's all it matters... he is happy with it. He just bought it today and now he's already planning a road trip to Colorado.

Why not? Hyundai make excellent cars.

I personally don't think they are excellent. I think they copy a lot of other automakers style and I would be embarassed to own one. To me their only quality is to feed the cheapness like Walmart and super-size Mcdonalds consumer market. I don't have any respect for Korean cars and personally dislike them. At least the Japanese makes had some originality. The Korean makes just rode their coattails.

HAHAHAH Japanese? Originality? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH. Who's paying you to say such things?
It's normal for people like you, they are being more successful every year and you're in denial...it's ok, bud.

I have no idea what you are talking about

. I'm not a fan of any foreign cars but Japanese cars have always had mostly their own designs and styling. All makers borrow and imitate some. But Hyundais are clearly cheap and shameful knock offs of other makes.

My Dad owned American junk in the 70's-80's, then American and German junk in the 90's, with good Japanese mixed in (a Subaru). He has now owned Hondas for about 9 years and they are the only vehicles he's ever owned that don't break down or need anything other than regular maintenance. He's starting to loose his relationship with his mechanic...

Whom did Hyundai copy with 2011 Sonata and Elantra, or 2010 Genesis, or Equus? Or Kia with 2010 Forte, Forte Koup or Sorrento?

Most people don't care about the engines or transmissions. It's all technical mumbo jumbo to them. What they do care about is the styling, and if you can sit there and tell me with a straight face, that the 11 sonata, and MB C300 don't look almost identical, then you need to get your eyes checked.

Genesis sedan looks like a Lexus/Mercedes mash up. Genesis coupe has Infiniti type face and a familiar rear. Forte looks like a Civic.

They are nice cars, but not something that really stands out looks wise.

Anybody remember the Kia Amanti?

His experience with the Honda is very much the exception, not the rule. My daughter's 1st car was (and still is) a Honda Civic and I'm glad it is because she's very hard on vehicles and I doubt anything from the big 3 would hold up very well under her use. It just keeps on going without complaint.

The Koreans are making better vehicles, but I don't think they're on par with the better Japanese makes yet. My problem with them is so many people are basically giving them a free pass. 10 years ago cars from Korea were pure junk, and now people are willing to anoint them as the best vehicles made. I'm not quite ready to jump on that bandwagon just yet. Let them prove themselves like the Japanese have done over the last several decades and maybe I'll change my tune....

Let me tell you something....my dad is extremely aggressive when he deals with money. One false move by the salesmen and there will be violence.

Unfortunately, the Hyundai and Chevrolet salesmen pee'd off my father and declined his demands.....the Toyota dealer met my dad's demands and the most surprisingly thing is that the Toyota dealer bought the Explorer $1,000 over the blue book value(which was one of my dad's demands).

Like most Toyota drivers, he's the type of guy who thinks an oil change is all you have to do when taking care of a car. I know Toyota owners buy Toyota's for that reason because Toyota's will run even without maintenance.

Anyway.....I am having depression now......44 years of American cars and it ended today.......

I think your father did what every rational person would do i.e. get the best deal they can get, it just so happens that Toyota gave him the best deal, at least he shopped around instead of blindly buying from the same manufacturer without even checking what the competition offers just because 20 years ago they had a bad experience with one car certain brand.

What is sad though is the fact that domestic dealers were so hard to deal with and only proves that the buying public should not take all the blame for being "brain washed" into buying foreign. Dealer experience is a big part of the buying process.

My, how time dims the memories. The first round of the Japanese invasion into the US was pure excrement. The fuel economy may have been great, but the cars weren't called tin-cans for nothing. And they would rust if you happened to drop a box of saltines next to them in the parking lot.

As has been mentioned several times on the board already, don't rag on the Koreans for doing to Japan what Japan did to Detroit. Some of us were around back then and will call you on it...and it can suck to be on Karma's bad side sometimes.

As for the OP, I feel your pain. I thought long and hard about my purchase, and the Sonata is the first "foreign" car I've owned in my 30+ years of driving. But in the end, a killer deal and a VIN starting with the number 5 rather than the number 3 that my second-choice (Chevy HHR) had were the deal-makers.

And for the record, both the Hyundai and Chevy dealers were bending over backwards for my business. The Honda dealer next door to the Hyundai dealer, however, I've heard is a PITA to deal with so I didn't even bother.

Samsung is the new Sony as Hyundai is the new Toyota. Electronics, appliances, cars.....they want to put Japan out of business....lol.

When I was a kid a Zenith TV was the only brand you wanted, then came Sony, and now Samsung.

Sorry for going off topic...

I'm not ragging on the Koreans at all. They know sucess when the see it and the Japanese model is a very successful one. Why not follow in their tracks? But what I am saying is the Koreans will get their due respect from me WHEN THEY EARN IT. It took the Japanese literally decades to earn the reputation they have now. If the Koreans can achieve the same level of quality the Japanese have attained (I don't think they're quite there yet), and maintain that level for a couple of decades, then I'm all in. Until then, the verdict's still out.....
