Porsche liked the Chevrolet Vega motor so much that they made a V8 version. A Dodge pickup truck was quicker in the quarter mile. (well, okay....one particular type of Dodge truck but still, if you lined up against a Lil' Red Express in a 928, you were going to see some oak inlaid tailgate)
 
The Alusil engines perform just fine in Porsches and BMWs. The Vega motor used an iron cylinder head and an open deck block that wasn't exactly the last word in torsional rigidity. Couple that with a cooling system that was only marginal when filled to capacity and the engine was a disaster waiting to happen. In the '90s BMW switched from Alusil to Nikasil blocks on some of their I6 and V8 engines and ran into all sorts of issues- mostly due to the high sulfur content of US and UK gasolines. Munich replaced the affected V8s with Alusil engines.
