Another American Car fan/owner has left.

Tundras did have their serious problems and limitations. And the Ford and Chevy are a more widely used and proven work truck.

Another +1 for it's the dealer, not the manufacturer. The local Honda dealer is an arrogant [rhymes with stick]. Both Chevy dealers are pretty good, and the Hyundai dealer I bought the Sonata from was also fair to deal with.

OK, now my "big head" is coming out! I HATE dealerships. Popinski's deal with the guy buying a Toyota due to a dealers practices is just a normal occurance with ALL car maker's dealers at one time or another.

The simple FACT is that the dealers are independantly owned business just selling the namebrand car. They are not a part of the automaker. I think this sucks because so many of these poor dealers ruin the good name of an automaker from lousy service and poor sales tactics.

The average stupid consumer doesn't know this so they blame the automaker when the automaker has nothing to do with it. I do agree that automakers should be more in control over the dealers...better yet- be company owned instead of private.

I also hate when dealership people say "I work for GM" when they do not! End of my rant. Sorry the guy had to stoop down to a Tundra because of the stupid dealership personnel.

Welcome to Franchising...

I deal with it everyday!

Fortunately I have access to an excellent BMW dealer and an excellent Mazda dealer. I also have a first-rate indie BMW tech and another small shop that handles the Jeep repairs I don't have time to do myself. Consequently, while I might consider other brands, I'm hesitant to screw up the good thing I've got going.

I'm trying to understand something here. Are people actually getting upset or critical of dealers because they won't sell the car at the price and terms they want? There are plenty of reasons to be upset at dealers but come on, this is over the top. A business doesn't owe you a deal.

I agree with you to a point. Dealers should have the right to charge any price they want- and more power to them if they actually get it. That said, dealers sometimes kill the goose that laid the golden egg by getting a bit too greedy. Two examples:

1. I bought my Mazdaspeed 3 in July 2007 when they were very popular and very scarce. My local(Louisville) Mazda dealers had plastered ADM stickers on their MS3s and wanted to play all sorts of games("Want to test drive the car? Sign a buyers order and put down a deposit", etc.). I finally found a dealer(Kings Mazda) in Cincinnati who actually encouraged me to test drive an MS3 without putting down a deposit. No ADM nonsense either. Guess who I called when I decided to buy? The only problem was that I wanted a Cosmic Blue Grand Touring with no options, and Kings didn't have one. I called my salesperson and he said he'd get back with me. He soon called back, telling me that he found the car I wanted in Cleveland and that it would be flatbedded in at no cost; only then did he ask for a deposit, which I gladly provided. I also received free oil changes for as long as I own the car.

2. I was all set to buy a Bullitt Mustang in Spring 2008 but my local dealer(who our family had bought five cars from) had an $8000 ADM stickers plastered on their one Bullitt in the showroom- and the sales guy laughed when I mentioned X-Plan. Eight months later the same guy is emailing me with information about X-Plan pricing and great rebates on the very same car. I responded by wishing him a Very Merry Chapter 11.

that is classic.

FWIW my local toyota dealer is pretty reasonable. they try to sell me markups at some services (fuel injector cleaner... $80... cabin air filter... when i don't even have one. have no problems with their service though. Would probably go to an independent from now on.

I am pretty well done with local dealers. In my opinion a car dealer should be owned by someone whom LIVES in the area, not a monopoly.
Of course, a local dealer whom is like that would not give their non-sales people decent hours, nor would they come down in price when I was considering replacing my previous car awhile ago. So I went elsewhere. I won't set foot in their place (nor a couple other similar local dealerships) again.

Good one. So if they bought a Chevy/GMC or Dodge they are just as dumb as buying a Toyota?

Glad there is no bias in your mindset....

News FLASH! Plenty of people WORK using all BRANDS of trucks. And they work just as well as the other brands.

What a statement....

Bill: I just meant that between the Ford and Toyota, the Ford is a better WORK truck IMO. Come to think of it, I think its a better work truck than Chevy and Dodge too.

Thank you.

If a buyer goes to numerous dealers and can't get the price he wants, he should get a clue that the price cannot be had. I respect that shoppers want a great deal, but getting one is not the fault of a particular car company.

The only thing this buyer was a fan of is getting his way. Next time, call it as it is.

I must be lucky but I only use the stealership for 2 things.

1. To buy a vehicle at the price I want to pay. If they play around then no sale and I go to the next stealership or get something else. Never get "in love" with a certain make or model. Never pay more than I feel the vehicle is worth. Its my check I'm writing and I work hard for the $$$.

2. Warranty work IF needed.

Other than that I don't put up with the silly sucker $80 a hour labor x number of hours and their silly markup to pay for the owner to by a NBA franchise.

And I buy vehicles that don't REQUIRE visiting the stealership all the time. Try to keep it SIMPLE so I can do the work.

So far for the most part, Its been working for me for decades and many different brands. A few HAVE required me wasting time getting warranty service but not as much in the past 15 years. In fact only one has been a problem child to the point that I sold it once the problem showed up twice. Disclosed to my friend (he already knew) that it had issues and he felt it was a great car/value.

I have a hard time believing the 4 Ford dealers were all arrogant crooks and the 1 Toyota dealer was cutting great deals. We don't have all the fact and figures. I don't know your friend but consumers tend to act irrational. Besides the title should be Ford fan/owner has left. Since it doesn't look like he gave Chevy or Dodge a look.

Agree!

I also found out all you have to do is change the salesperson at the dealer you want to deal with...To make a long story short when my sister went to trade in her troublesome 07 Camry [with only 7K miles] at Pompano Ford Linc Mercury for a 07 Grand Marquis LS [with also 7K miles on it] the first salesperson told her 21K bucks out the door...Both cars at the time were just a year old...I told her that was too high...Went back with her a few days later and got a different salesperson and she got the same car for a cheaper price and better trade in...It ended up being 16K bucks out the door.

I don't if any of you have done this, but it has worked for me several times. I only buy from a dealer that has their new car/truck inventory posted online with the Vin#'s and sell price listed (not just the MSR). Then I print it and go there, ask them to find the vehicle so I can test drive it. I already know if the price is within range and if I like it I only have to negotiate the trade in price if any..

I will not switch my vehicle choice and look at anything else while there and I'll leave if it's not available (already sold).

Seems to work for me!

That's a pretty stupid statement.
