My bias? I'm a fan of American cars. My next car will be American. I go to American classic car shows all the time with my friend. My favorite car is the '69 Dodge Challenger. I'm talking about dealers, not American cars in general.

I have a hard time believing the 4 Ford dealers were all arrogant crooks and the 1 Toyota dealer was cutting great deals. We don't have all the fact and figures. I don't know your friend but consumers tend to act irrational. Besides the title should be Ford fan/owner has left. Since it doesn't look like he gave Chevy or Dodge a look.

my work truck is a tundra -hands down the best truck i have owened yet. never been back to the dealer in 7 yrs-try that in an american truck

I bought my '99 F150 brand new and the dealer never saw it again, but uh.. it's only got 46k miles on it...

Been done and often. Atleast I know my frame will still be intact 7 years+ from now...

Mail order from the internet from someone who WANTS my business. Still cheaper than the local stealership.

I had one Toyota( 05 Tacoma )and it was back at the dealer and had more problems in 7 MONTHS than my 2 Silverado's and 6 Ram's had COMBINED. And X2 on the frame comment which was priceless.

I am going to echo what most have said and that is this isn't a "Big 3" thing. It is a local dealer issue where your friend lives. There are awful dealers under every mfg's logo all over this country. Actually, truth be told, on the whole I have always heard more negatives about crooked and arrogant dealers who sell Toyota's than I have any other brand. I know my one experience owning a Toyota was a nightmare and that was compounded by how horrible the local dealers were.

You know, I have to say I found your story hard to swallow. Not calling you a liar just that it immediately didn't sound right. Toyota dealers have always been known for NOT negotiating. They have been known for having a take it or leave it attitude( for the most part - not all )where as other car brand dealers will work with you. Guess Toyota dealers always felt that Toyota's reputation would keep people coming in so they could afford to let people walk away who wouldn't pay top dollar for a vehicle.

I would say that has changed now though since all their chickens came home to roost and they have lost their shine so to speak. So I guess it is possible your friend got the best deal on a Tundra. I do find it hard to believe though that 4 Ford dealers wouldn't work with him. Just doesn't sound right? Just seems like we/you didn't get all the story.
 
Sounds like a friend problem, not a dealer or manufacturer problem. (And no, not a salesperson problem, either).

Salespeople don't make the final call on the bottom line for pricing, at 99% of dealerships, anyway. That's a manager's call, and enough of their time is taken up with "customers" who owe ten grand more on their trade than it's worth, and are looking to lower their monthly note while upgrading their ride. So when a real buyer comes in, they take notice.

F150's grow on trees. You sell one, you can get two back in a hurry. You can bet that if a real buyer walks from your lot, he's made an unreasonable and an offer you just can't take. And if four Ford dealers in a row don't take it...you do the math.

Either Toyota had some dealer cash that Ford didn't, your friend upped his offer and was ashamed to admit it, or he bought a truck with less equipment after being turned down at four Ford dealers. It wasn't that they "wouldn't deal", it's that they wouldn't take a loss to see your friend drive away in their truck.

The key part of that statement is "never been back to the dealer." Well that I can accept, my truck's never been back to the dealer either. But if you are trying to say that it's never had to have anything fixed on it – Well, that has got to be one of the biggest loads of Godzilla Dung I've ever seen. Especially since the Tundra has to be one the most problem prone truck models on the market to day.

I have owned trucks from all of the big 3, jeep, and toyota. They all make good and bad. The one I traded on the Tundra I just bought in march was a VERY problematic GMC Sierra. It loved being at the dealer!
I went with the Tundra this time because of it having the biggest cab in the 1/2 ton market (crewmax) and one of the most powerful engines as well.
 
I ran a 1993 Pathfinder SE from 1994-2003, and I bought my Wrangler in 2002 and still have it. Each vehicle had a few issues but none of them were significant enough to cross either make off my list. As a matter of fact, I bought the Jeep out of political necessity and only planned to keep it about 10-12 months. However, the jeeps quirky personality grew on me and I ended up selling the Pathfinder instead. If something happened to the Wrangler I'd definitely consider another Jeep, although it would likely be another TJ- and probably a Rubicon at that.
