Hit hard enough to roll my car over a median I was in park. The underside of the hatch where the spare tire sits is shaped like a V, and the roof is buckled at the top where the antennae is. Speed limit on the road is 50 mph, she admitted to going that fast and not having time to brake. It's no different than sideswiping someones mirror at 50mph,(doesn't mean the car will be totaled), it's all about the angle I was hit. Surely I wont waste any more of my time arguing with you experts, I'm sure it was possible she was going 47mph by the time she swerved. There is likely a ton of damage underneath, and both left rims and tires are trash, and it doesn't even steer straight.

Looked at some used Prius today, all were in crumby shape compared to mine, or were bare bones models. All of the halfway decent ones are 15-16k, I may just find something else for 10k, cause the 5k I would save buys a lot of gas. Mini Cooper maybe, who knows.

Sorry you are offended but a lot of this just doesn't add up??? No one is saying you are lieing about getting hit and no one is blamming you for the accident or anything. Just discussing what we see and what you have written.

I have seen a TON of crashes. I used to go write crash orders at body shops for the repair quotes( i.e. dealer body parts )and what that photo shows does not equate to a 50 MPH hit. Is it possible? Sure, anything can happen I guess but my educated eyes say it was 1/2 that speed. Unless that photo is at just the perfect angle to hide things it doesn't appear to be very bad. Certainly doesn't looik like a Jeep going 50 MPH hitting a parked Prius with the end result being the Prius totaled.

The damage shown just doesn't match the claimed impact speed. A corner hit like that( actually can be worse than straight on as it is easier to ding the frame ) going 50 MPH would have done MUCH more damage than that. You would have been spun around to face the opposite direction not just pushed over the median and no question there would have been far more visible cosmetic damgage.

She may have been going over 15 MPH but I just don't believe 50. More the 20-25 I said. Also, why were you in park in the middle of a 50 MPH road? Don't you really mean you were stopped and sitting there with your foot on the brake at a light or something? A 25 MPH hit, that startles you and cauuses you to ease off the brake, can easily cause you to roll over a median. If you were hit at 50 MPH in park it would have been much worse than it was.

If she was texting and not paying attention how does she know how fast she was going anyway? In the end what really matters is you weren't hurt. A car is just a "thing" that can be replaced. Your life can't.

Please understand nothing people are saying who question the details is meant as a personal attack on you. Just discussing the plausibility of the initial comments you made. They don't seem to add up. I think it is entirely understandable and even common following an accident to over state what happened without even knowing it. No one is or would fault you if that is the case. Completely understandable.

Again, what matters is YOU are not totaled.

IIRC, when you take your foot of the brake in a Prius it just sits there waiting for further input.

Not really, as soon as you take your foot off the brake, the electric motor engages and the car creeps forward a little, the same way a conventional car with an automatic trans does.

Its hard to tell the damage from the pics. There are too many variables as far as point of impact and what part of the car absorbed the impact to assume the speed it was hit. Not sure why people are trying to guess over the internet.

Sure the bumper looks crushed, but you don't know how far the damage goes beyond that. I saw a car that got rear ended at 55 mph or so. The rear bumper just looked pushed in and the rear glass shattered. Everything else as far as the trunk and rear quarter panels looked fine. I looked underneath it and the whole frame was buckled.

The point was you get hit, are startled and without realizing it your foot eases off the brake, and then the momentum from the impact makes you go forward.

Speed limit was 35 but its like a dragway everyone does 45-55mph.

Damage doesnt look that bad but it was estimated at 15k+

so.. my point.. its really hard to tell from pictures sometimes.

my advice YOU dont HAVE to accept what they offer for your car..
it will be extreme lowball.

Ask them to find a similar replacement car in similar condition.

they were comparing mine to a different model car that cost 4000$ less..

then they tried comparing with ones with 4x the miles that were beat up...

they tried all kinds of dirty stuff.

when they lowball you make them give you the comparable cars they are using to determine what you get.. it gives you ammo.

it took me 2 monthes but I ended up getting 30% more than the initial offer.

for reference my 15000$ accident

This is great advice, though for $15k on a hyundai, you could buy a new one, so no idea how the value of the damage could be that high for that picture... But anyway, that's the craziness of it all!

J F C! I watched her barrel towards me for 2 seconds, thinking she was going to switch lanes real quick, then I realized she had nowhere to go, as the traffic in the next lane over was just starting to move. I'm a pretty good judge of speed. I was in park because we had been stopped for a while, and I had been digging through my console. The car will not move forward when putting in drive unless you step on the accelerator, and I was not in gear when I went over the curb. Lets argue about something better, like what car to replace it with for 10k or so. I'm not big on buying used cars, so I figure if I end up with a turd, at least it's a 10k turd and not a 16k turd. I'll never buy a new car again for the purpose of commuting.

Two cars I'm going to look at tomorrow, are an '09 Fit with 42k, and an '05 Prius with almost 100k. Something about buying an 8 year old Hybrid makes me nervous, and I was disappointed in seeing that the fit has a combined rating of 29mpg.

For the price of those used cars why not condsider a NEW Nissan Versa sedan, Hyundai Accent, or Kia Rio, Mazda 2, ect...

Hate to say it but it would be a bad decision to buy a Prius with 100k on it. Sure Prius is reliable, but that still is a lot of miles and the price is pretty high.

Yeah the new sky active Mazdas are supposed to get great mileage. My prizm still gets 40 mpgs.

Relax man. No need to swear. I agree let's drop it because it is pointless. Doesn't really matter if you are overstating what happened. You are ok as I said and that is what matters. Good luck with the new car search.

3 things.

1. Glad you came out fine.
2. That does not look like that much damage.
3. There is no way with that much damage on your car that a Jeep Commander would be a write off.

I'm surprised that that is totaled, did they write an estimate? What do they say it is worth?

Glad everyone is O.K. at least, cars are easier to fix or replace than people...

I see, the fact you drive 97 prizm makes you better than Prius drivers? As far as I can see, you are a total moron.

I know you are still a teenager, but you have to learn to control your aggression at some point before it's too late.

First off, I'm going to guess you've never driven in Boulder, CO.
It's something to be experienced, when you get to deal with certain types of personalities on the road with you. You learn pretty quickly that certain types of cars in the Boulder, CO area are more likely to be driven by certain personality types.

So, 97Prism's words, while to you seem offensive, are based on his own experiences on the road, with which I can concur 100%.

Oh, and my sister used to own a 95 Geo Prism.
I can also say with 100% certainty that whenever I drove that car, I was better than anyone who owned a Prius. Even though I don't drive that car anymore, I'm still better.

That's just because I think I'm better than just about anyone else out there.
It's part of being a man.

It may not actually be true, but it makes me happy, and that's all I care about.
Same as 97Prism, I would bet.

I no longer work in Boulder (thank any deity you prefer), and while I know and understand what you are saying, my experiences were always worse with Subaru drivers than Prius drivers.

How do you know they think that? Have you talked to every Prius owner in Boulder? I doubt it.

This is stereotyping and it's obviously incorrect.

Some people buy Prisues for the gas mileage, not because they're "snooty" or "yuppie."

My 60-year-old dad bought a used Prius when he was car shopping because he had a long commute and it got much better mileage than the other used cars in his price range. He's been super happy with his. He's definitely not "snooty" or a "yuppie."

It appears that neither you nor your wife are correct. Here are some quick statistics on accident rates/fatalities by gender, broken down by age group. Males are involved in far more accidents, and those accidents are usually much more severe than those which involve female drivers. It's why males (where not constrained by state law) have higher insurance rates than females.

For comparison, here is the gender split for the same age groups.

Nope. I know women for the most part are much worse drivers then men. I don't care what your pretty green chart says....LOL I see it in real life and when you have a job where you log 100,000 miles a year you see a fair amount of bad drivers on the road and a vast majority are women.

this guy just survived a bad crash with a car he babied to death and you guys want to debate about mph? i'd be pis sed off too.
