My daughter got rear-ended on the way home from school last night. She is going to be sore for a while and the doc said she probably has a mild concussion. From the pics of her Jeep WJ that she sent me I thought it wasn't going to be that bad... just a torn rear bumper cover and a dent on the rear hatch. Nope, she's totaled. You can see that the roof line is bowed down in the back, you can stick your finger through gaps at the top of the rear doors. The door frames are so distorted that the doors can barely be closed. I'm guessing it took most of the impact on the trailer hitch which bent the uni-body pretty good.

Now my 20 yr old daughter gets to experience the joy of insurance companies, whiplash, back pain, etc.

rear-endings are the worst in that your fate totally relies on someone else.

which is why I try to scoot to the right side of the lane as much as possible when the person behind is getting antsy. Look bro/dudette, I'm going as fast as I can---see!

some really f----*#(@#*$ impatient people out there who think that they're the only person on the road at 4:30p, lmao.

Thanks for the wreck pic! Just from the one picture it really doesn't show the bad parts you mentioned roof line is bowed down in the back, you can stick your finger through gaps at the top of the rear doors. The door frames are so distorted

Hope she is O.K. Got to keep a close eye on the noggin and cerebrospinal fluid after that kind of accident. Similar accident happened to me in the 80s in my friends CJ-7 Laredo.
Was in the middle divider/turning lane waiting to take a left and got rear ended by a couple drunk painters in a Econoline passing some one illegally, Neck was sore for weeks and can get sore or painful when strained to this day. That hit felt like we got booted into lightspeed - very shocking!

Take care of your daughter, Hope she recovers without issues. - Arco

Hope your daughter heals quickly with no lingering issues. The car, well its gone. I hope she can borrow one for a while. Might be a good time to upgrade to something a bit better on gas? However it could also be a good time to upgrade to a bigger car like a Tank :)

I asked her what color she wanted her new minivan to be. She wasn't enthused.

People are not paying attention - I have changed my routes even if it takes a few minutes longer - no sitting duck to make turns - avoiding LH turns -
even turn around in parking lots to avoid risk …
Heck, it’s not just safety anymore - supply chain on parts - cost of insurance - collision center wait times - poor repair quality, lost resale, etc, etc,

Agreed. Unfortunately, this happened on the interstate which she can't avoid traveling on.

The bumper will buff out and the gaps can be filled with JB Weld and duct tape. 'Tis fine!!

edit: also curious where insurance values a WJ. I'm guessing $2-3k

$3k would be awesome for a WJ with (minor) previous body damage and 230k miles. At least now I don't have have to do the oil change it was due for.

I told her I could make new back door gaskets out of pool noodle foam and duct tape but she still insists on a new car. Kids these days, LOL.

You will be looking for retail $ on your claim, plus sales tax. Do an autotrader etc. search on your model, year, miles for sale with 500 miles or more. Be prepared for the value discussion with your insurer. Go highest value you see. They won't care if your car had dents etc.

Hope your daughter gets better soon. Keep a close eye, symptoms may take days to appear.

Had a young female employee get into a crash, took her months to get through the soft tissue injures and headaches from the concussion. A Ford Escape turned into her, hit her right below the A-pillar in the Ram 1500 she was driving. No crush space in that area. She got the worse of it.

I hope she gets better soon and I am genuinely grateful that it was not worse!

Getting rear ended is so frustrating because you were not at fault, and there was very little you could do.

Any accident comes with some amount of out-of-pocket cost and inconvenience, and let us hope, a minimum of medical consequence.
