Do some brands compress more than others when tightening down the housing?
Sort of but usually it is not due to being dimensional longer. This style filter when it first came out did not have a center cage that spin on its axis separate from the outer filter media and was problematic of twisting the filter media when tightening down the oil filter cap. MOPAR revised the OEM filter pretty quickly to make the center cage spin to minimize this. Most of the aftermarket also revised their filters also to incorporate this change but some spin less freely than others. The WIX version of this filter is probably the worse in this regard.

I have not felt any compress by snapping it to the cap first and then you should only feel drag from the O-ring. SuperLube is good for that. I do mine with a T-Handle due to fragile nature of cooler/housing.

Ah, never did Wix - pretty much Fram or Mobil 1 …
