I ran this cartridge filter 10.5k miles in my 2000 VW eurovan. It's a little wavy/warped but not too bad. Nothing shiny in the Pleats, no obvious holes. The oil that came out of it was blacker than I'd hoped, but still dispersed well on the business card. Oil was Mobil 1 0w-40 euro, 60% SP, 40% leftover SN

Is this their extended mileage version. I tried to search on PG website but all I got was a PG5251 part number. Looks ok & deformity most likely happened during interval.

Looks like a discontinued part number for the non extended version. It crosses to CH8158 which crosses to PG5545EX which is the current PG specified filter for his application.

I agree it's almost certainly the non extended drain version. As far as I can tell (mostly by looking at Rock Auto), there are only a few "better than what was available OEM in the year 2000" filters. One is the non-pro series k+n filter, and the Purolator. But it's hard to spend 12-15 bucks when there's 2 dollar filters available. I'm kinda thinking about doing more filter changes than oil changes, but it what feels a bit silly.

Looks like Mann and Hengst are cheaper. I know what I would buy…. Okay, twist my arm, it’s Mann.

I forgot to mention, the reason for the change, other than getting up there in miles, is I was getting a somewhat frequent startup rattle; probably from the chain tensioner pumping up (approx 1 second after the starter catches). I'm hoping this goes away with this filter change, but I haven't done a cold startup. The van only gets driven 1-2 times per week. I'll post back in a week or two to report if the brief clatter went away or not

The $3.07 filter is the Premium Guard Extended.

The Hengst and Mann will meet OE requirements.

US brands are all about marketing to make you upgrade. They will simultaneously say that they meet OE requirements while saying their basic filters are only good for 3000-5000 miles even when OE might be 10,000 miles.

Napa Proselect has the same media as the Napa Gold / PG Extended Life. They still try to market it as a shorter life filter but if a shop is buying it, it needs to be OE equivalent in terms of longevity and filtering.

Being a cartridge filter, it doesn't have an ADBV. It's most likely built into the cartridge housing. If the rattle is from the oil draining down from the filter housing, might want to checkout the bypass valve for proper function or replace it if it's replaceable.

I put in another cheapo. Auto xtra something on the box, but I ordered from Rockauto:

Wholesaler Closeout - Private

PRO-TEC

this time I'm only planning on 5000 miles but maybe that depends on whether this fixed the short clatter issue. I still have 2 other copies, I'll grab pictures later. The auto extra actually has quite a bit more pleats than mann OEM and the premium guard that came out. Not sure if that's a good sign or bad

The filter housing is mounted at about 45 degrees to the vertical but it shouldn't drain much as the inlet and outlet are about as close to the top as possible.

Second startup will be tonight (first was with the fuel pump fuse pulled as you can only get about 1/4 of the lost volume into the filter cap; dunno if priming the oil is worth it, but I did it).

Some cars pressing the gas to the floor defeats starting. Some don’t, but I have used this method to prime the oil. .

I'll try that if I remember tonight, but I kinda doubt it. It's got a cable operated throttle, but maybe. I think the next year, 2001, got the throttle by wire.

Better find out before trying. Dry start to redline not an ideal situation, lol.

Try it after the test start. I have a car that has cable throttle and it started wide open. I am sure it wasn’t the first time as it was a used car. Another prevents starting. Of course fuel injection normally means starting with foot off the gas. People still say their car doesn’t start good, and I ask if they keep foot off the gas? They usually don’t listen because foot off gas just doesn’t sound right to them.

Protec is Wix. It should meet OE spec.

What are the countries of manufacture of these various filters?

I just posted all the filters in my stash here:

Auto xtra is Poland, Mann Germany, champion China, k&n korea

Yeah some idiots used to put videos on YT where they crank a beater and redline it in -0 degree temps.
I forgot both times I started the car today/yesterday, but when I try it it'll be a hot/warm restart, like after gassing up.

I only did the two cold starts, but neither had the chain tensioner induced rattle, so maybe a new filter cured that? It's probably too early to tell, but I would have expected the rattle on both of these startups. The van has 255k miles and is now back to being as loud as most vr6s. Actually it sounds the same but maybe without the short rattle on startup.
