Motorcraft FL910s

I opened a FL910s yesterday out of pure boredom with no intention of doing a C&P. Figured I'd see what all the recent fuss is about. I've long advocated for these filters and they've been my go-to for about a decade. The filter was out of an Explorer with a 5k/6month OCI.

First, I found these pieces littered throughout the filter media. I took a picture of one to show as an example, but you'll just need to take my word for it. They are very thin and flexible, almost like a piece of plastic from a grocery bag. Picture attached.

Next, the hard plastic edges were very brittle and I was able to break pieces off by hand using little to no effort. Picture attached.

So, am I being overly critical, or what's going on here?

I understand these are mass produced consumables, but the idea of oil filters shedding debris is quite concerning.

It's bad when it goes through the relief and clogs an oil galley. It's why a lot on here focus on metal cleats with good glue application.

It could also go through the relief valve and get stuck, leaving it partially open.

Wouldn't be there for long. It could get jammed but once the valve opens more when pressure builds it'll go through.

only safe bet right now is Premium Guard/fleetguard/Donaldson

I'd suggest premium guard made filters. The carquest premium is a solid filter that is ticking all the boxes.

I'd suggest premium guard made filters. The carquest premium is a solid filter that is ticking all the boxes.

Beware of ticking boxes.

Not buying Made in China stuff, If the engine blows due to a defective Motorcrapft part - it blows!

But that is easy for me to say as my Ford is still under the factory powertrain warranty

I do like the base end bypass, but the excess potting required to glue media to the metal end caps - then the sometimes sloppy glue application is more than an annoyance - it's a failure requiring a front office Quality Bulletin. Maybe all the previous c&p images here from Stude and others and from whip will wake 'em up!

Another M+H casualty. You can put a piece of in a box and mark it oem, but it’s still in a box….

A few here have shown otherwise finding filter glue in the oil pan. The pieces can and do go through the bypass valve.

Even if you're right that they should not, why would someone want to risk it? I don't think wanting a non-shedding oil filer is too much to ask.

A non-flowing Chinese made OEM Nissan Filter blew my new Versa engine within days of buying it.
Garbage is everywhere!

I have lost big bucks due to the industry "ignoring" a two-dollar commodity item that will grenade that pricey hunk of rotating iron and aluminum up front.

Posted about it multiple times since 2014! with photos.

Basically the filter maker's carboard endcaps were too large a diameter and jammed into the filter can sides and there was barely 1 thousandth of an inch for oil to get by the inlet holes and to the element. First cold day on the way to work spun a bearing. Low rpm operation during warmup.

That's the glue they use coming loose. The very reason I stopped using a Motorcraft on my Coyote V8.

NOTE the pieces breaking off on the INSIDE of the center tube which can do directly into the engine. He said he also found that debris in the OIL PAN.
