Most expensive paid for repair

Most expensive paid for repair

As far as I can remember, over my 47 years of driving (and vehicle ownership), my most expensive "paid for" repair was $485.
That was back in 1978 at a Firestone shop, for upper & lower control arm bushings, on my 1968 3/4 ton Chevy pick-up.
I had to borrow the money from my mom, which I paid back over a few months.

Most mechanics today would have no idea how to change those metal screw style bushings.

I had an engine put in my '04 F150 5.4 3V. I didn't want any part of it, but the truck was too nice to give up on. It was about $6,000. Being old and having a few dollars has given me choice. Tonight I changed a HVAC actuator. It was a $1000 job at the dealer. I did it for $39 and an hour and a half of time.

$4600 for a transmission rebuild on a 2004 BMW 530i last year. which was worth about $5000 at the time @91k miles. If is gives me 5-6 more years of service, then worth it - I don't need to buy a new car.

In 2010 - a transmission replaced on a 02 Odyssey - with the problematic trans - just outside the extended Honda warranty @96k miles - after Honda of NA offered a 50% goodwill discount, my share for the job (+new ECU) was $1900 - still running 15 yrs later - at 222k miles now.

A coworker just got burned by VCM on 2013 Ody with 130k. $5600 to fix major engine issues/misfire.

Apparently this has 10 year extended warranty/or till Jan 31 2026 for many Honda models esp recent including my 2015 Pilot (got letter).

His VIN excluded and no goodwill offered by Honda despite exclusive dealership maintenance on a previous 2003 Civic just traded on 2025 CRV and this van.

For that I’d take it to an indie. No guarantee today but 10 years ago often 1/2 the price of a dealer and much better job. Is $5600 even worth it on a 2013? With misfires how about the CATs? They often spell game over due to cost. We were about to install a Walker and I was curious if it would work and how
Long would it last

The fix was piston ring replacement / cleanup of internals and spark plug replacements. More labor intensive than parts.

$6500 for a rebuilt transmission 94 F350 2wd, drw, got a 3y &36k mile warranty but sucks either way. It was still cheaper than a new truck and I already had money invested to not quit on it. Will try and get my money's worth out of it as it's my camper towing truck and grocery getter. Love the truck, just not the unexpected cost, but it was used, and it happens.

If you can keep the rust out of it, replacing parts is going to be cheaper than a new truck, if you can do the little stuff yourself.

Yeah she has a super clean body and frame as it came from the south, one reason I bought it. I use Woolwax on my vehicles to help keep them from rusting. Has worked well over the last 20yrs living in PA.
