Who do you think is Mobil's #1 competitor worldwide? If what a Mobil tech told me is true, and it makes perfect sense, it's pretty easy to figure out.

In what field? "Synthetic" or "conventional" motor oils? Gasoline? US or worldwide?

Regardless of the field, I'd think Royal Dutch Shell or Chevron.

"Castrol?"

Yup.

Can't confirm this, but that is what I was told. Castrol does make some excellent oils. The 5w-40, 0w-40 and 0w-30 are all excellent IMO.

From my travels, My guess is Castrol and Mobil may be the biggest players on the world scene but I suspect Castrol may be bigger in gallons sold as they seem to have a bigger non-synthetic showing overseas. OF course, each individual counry may have strong players and I'm sure Pennzoil/Quaker State is a pretty big player in the US. Royal Dutch Shell may also be a pretty darn big player worldwide too.

Just received a report today on market shares and this was the way it broke down.

USA Passenger Car Oil (includes pick-ups, etc)
1. Pennzoil
2. Quaker State
3. Valvoline
4. Texaco Havoline
5. Castrol
6. All the rest. This includes brands like Mobil, Conoco/Phillips, CITGO, and all the OEM oils.

USA HDEO:
1. Shell
2. Chevron
3. Mobil
4. All the rest

USA Industrial Lubricants: (paper mills, etc)
1. Mobil
2. Chevron
3. Shell
4. All the rest

Europe Passenger Car Oils:
1. Shell
2. Mobil
3. Castrol

Asia Passenger Car Oils:
1. Shell
2. Castrol
3. Mobil

Worldwide Shipping: (large freighters, etc)
1. Shell
2. Castrol
3. Cal/Tex
4. Mobil

Now to give you an example of size (volumes) in the USA. There is more Pennzoil sold than Quaker State and Valvoline put together. Depending on what market segment you are looking at, Pennzoil has anywhere from 29% to 44% market share.

Just enough to get my kid through college, after that I retire, then I don't care.

Americans are suckers for marketing BS. When in doubt spend another 100 million on TV ads. These stats prove it pays to advertise. Penzoil is not a better oil than chevron supreme or havoline. The HDEO trucking industry knows better. Dan

DR based on todays standards I will not disagree with you, but 5 to 6 years ago Pennzoil was twice the oil that Chevron or Havoline was. And by todays standards, Chevron and Havoline are not better than Pennzoil.

It's the turcking industry that has made Shell Rotella T number one, so I guess they must know someting? Don't know, I'm not a trucker and never really kept up with it until Shell bought us out 2 years ago.

Just making the point that the best seller is not necessarily best product. Penzoil is a very good but is it better than the rest? I suppose that depends on who you ask. My favorite is the ASV. Dan

When I was at Walmart a couple months back, the new Mobil EP sure look like it didn't move much.

A few would read the label but there was not much shelves restocking of Mobil.

I just spoke with the head stock clerk for the motor oil line and he states that Mobil EP sales has pickup. It's one of their best sellers and restocking the Mobil seems like an everyday thing.

Advertising sells! No question about that!

The biggest reason I hear from truckers is because it is available everywhere. It's a good oil but I don't see any evidence that it is better than other diesel oils.

Well - Shell motor oil doesn't exactly have the best reputation in the US for motor oil. It's probably just a matter of marketing and word of mouth. I recall when they were trying to market "Fire & Ice" motor oil with little success. Back in my HS/college days, my car crazy friends were convinced that any conventional oil by Mobil, Shell, or Chevron had to be inferior because it didn't cost as much as Castrol, Pennzoil, etc.
