I wonder if it 10W-30 went up (It was a tiny little percent).

5W-30 EP is 30% also but none of the other bases are listed at all. Anyone got any idea which bases are likely to not be listed on a MSDS?

Esters are usually left out. Not saying this oil has esters, just answering your question from a general perspective.

Okay, NOW I remember. My bad, I think I was confused since my car calls for 5w20 (at least officially) and my manual says

API SM or above
ILSAC GF-4 or above
ACEA A5 or above

I've always thought of it as an "and" statement, and the only 5w20 a5/b5 at the time was M1 EP. Nothing to do with 5w30 haha

Hi SlavaB,

And yes, the recommedations are "or" between each. :)

thx wemay
yeah it's pretty confusing, notice how it doesnt state 'and' or 'or' relationship for the oil selections, yet it does say 'DOT3 or DOT4' for the brake fluid

They hired a few Liberal Arts graduates to write that section of the owner's manual for various Hyundai and KIA models because they were cheap and wanted those manuals to look cool. Half the time even Hyundai dealerships don't understand them. Or maybe they intended it to be like a religious book: open to interpretation. Who really knows...

That goes for VW and many other's too. Lol
...and just to piggyback off a different thread we conversed in, i also have this 5W20 on the docket for a future OCI in the Passat. :)

I have pointed this out repeatedly to the "better use 5w20 than 0w20" crowd here, only to be shouted down by the crowd. In almost all cases, a 0w20 is a better oil then the equivalent brand 5w20.

Yes yes, bbbbb... but 5W-20 has more ZDDP...

I'm glad that unlike other forums, on BITOG there isn't an admin or staff member with a stick behind someone reminding them to stay on the topic every time the discussion changes course a little bit. Talking freely is important and engaging.

At one point I was possessed with the contents of the base oil. Now all I care about are the final specs and how the motor oil performs. You can drive yourself crazy chasing the ideal motor oil, it doesn't exist. So you end up using the right oil for your application, and that's about the best you can do.
Wouldn't the right oil for your application BE the ideal oil?

I meant that in the context that we're always chasing oils that, in our opinion, have the best ingredients. I remember reading about German Castrol, it was like the second coming for a while. That's what I meant. The off the shelf oils that are API certified and carry approvals are safe to use, so it's hard to go wrong with any of them. But this is BITOG, so we like to nitpick 😁

I'm not real sure EP has changed in 8 years. It appears to have been the same formula since 2012 just looking at it. I think pretty much the only thing that's changed is the bottle. I know claimed they already met SN+ requirements then and needed no changes to meet SP.

Contrary to what some people will say I really do believe some oils are built above the absolute minimum required to meet the standards. Now if it will perform significantly better with 3,000 mi changes in your 300 I-6 Ford is a totally different question.
