Mobil1 has updated their website. Reg M1 now good for up to 10K miles (in print) / 30% PAO (5W-20).

I wonder if it 10W-30 went up (It was a tiny little percent).

5W-30 EP is 30% also but none of the other bases are listed at all. Anyone got any idea which bases are likely to not be listed on a MSDS?

They don't have to list non-hazardous materials that they use to manufacture the motor oil... or so they say. You're just expected to take it on good faith that it's good motor oil. And you wonder why there are so many opinions and even beliefs when it comes to motor oil.

M1 appears to often list GIII and GIII+ so it made me wonder if 5W-30 EP might have some POE and AN in it. 50%+ AN would be pushing it.

I have no clue. But before I knew anything about motor oil I used to run Mobil Delvac or Rotella 15W-40 in my truck and Castrol GTX 5W-30 in my Mazda 6 about 16 years ago. Then I got a fancier car and got a fancier oil, which was Mobil 1. I heard that it's supposed to be the best motor oil that's available everywhere, so I stuck with it. For street use, to take my son to daycare and drive around I'm already overdoing it :ROFLMAO:

I don't trust boutique oils (I don't mean Amsoil or Red Line), but stuff like Quantum Blue for example. These big companies will always put out decent products and that's good enough for me.

So, if I can't get the info from an SDS, then sure as heck they won't send it to me if I email them. So no point in beating myself up.

Same. Only a few. Amsoil, Red Line, HPL and Driven....that's about it for me.

Interesting, 0W-20 EP is 60-70%PAO. Not sure what it was before.
Someone should go through all the new SP MSDS and summarize all these. I'm sure it on someone's mind.

Because Facebook is far more important these days …

Technology has become our new God and we deluded ourselves in believing that Technology is our Lord and Saviour. Naturally, that's where the money is flowing now. We are actually so arrogant that we believe that these smartphones on wheels that we call electric cars will solve our environmental pollution problems. It's crazy to see that when someone can afford one, they run out and buy a Tesla. It's okay though, time is the great equalizer that will tame human arrogance and set us straight.

Perhaps, then there's more people working from home, less travel, CV-19 and the push for EVs to name a few of many problems big oil is having. Oh and lets not forget TSLA, there's a lot of money pouring into that company, maybe from people selling oil stocks to finance it.

Having said that I really didn't want to derail the thread with my initial comments, I was just replying to a quote.

BITOG soon will be 42% Mobil1 (up from 39% right now, I guess). Are PAO getting cheaper vs. GTL?

I'm glad that unlike other forums, on BITOG there isn't an admin or staff member with a stick behind someone reminding them to stay on the topic every time the discussion changes course a little bit. Talking freely is important and engaging.

At one point I was possessed with the contents of the base oil. Now all I care about are the final specs and how the motor oil performs. You can drive yourself crazy chasing the ideal motor oil, it doesn't exist. So you end up using the right oil for your application, and that's about the best you can do.

1 thing that I noticed yesterday when bought a jug of m1 5w30, it says it’s a5/b5. I might be mistaken, but quite sure only EP had a5/b5 approval before

Do they even need an approval for ACEA A5 or can they just claim it?

Good question, I don't know really. It just has sparked some memories, since my Kia calls for a5/b5 and I remember when I searched only the EP had it a year ago

Yes, but your KIA also allows for ACEA A3 if A5 is not available, and should also allow for API SM or SL if nothing else is available. Those engines were built with the global market in mind to run with just about any motor oil inside and on any kind of gasoline, within reason of course. The computer can actually adjust for premium fuel if you want to splurge on it. You'll get a bit beefier torque and higher MPG, but it won't justify the price difference.

Okay, NOW I remember. My bad, I think I was confused since my car calls for 5w20 (at least officially) and my manual says

API SM or above
ILSAC GF-4 or above
ACEA A5 or above

I've always thought of it as an "and" statement, and the only 5w20 a5/b5 at the time was M1 EP. Nothing to do with 5w30 haha
