Mobil1 burns off easier?

I have an 02 Subaru Impreza WRX (2.0L Turbo) with 45k miles and have been using Mobil1 5w30 for a while now. I have to add about 2+ quarts over the 5000mi oci. Some of the other WRX owners seem to have the same problem with M1. The consensus is that M1 is one of the thinnest 5w30 oils you can get and just tends to burn off easier in our cars. My car is modified and dyno'd with about 50 more whp than stock.

While 2 quarts is not a lot, the consumption is not predictable. I can lose a quart in 1 week, or lose nothing in a month. I think it depends on how hard I'm driving. Also, a long trip of a straight 700 miles, lost me a full quart both times.

I've tried Valvoline 5w30 synthetic in the past and had a lot less consumption, but I don't believe its worth the cost. I also used Redline 5w30, but it was much worse than even the M1. I'm leaning towards either Mobil clean 7500 or Motorcraft synthetic blend 5w30. Opinions?

That sounds like the perfect engine for GC

What about trying either German Castrol 0W30 or Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5W40?

I used the Mobil 1 5W40 in my 2002 Saab 9-3 2.0L (high output turbo) and it worked great. No consumption issues and easily handled the heat from that engine & turbo.

Using 2 qts every OCI seems high, but I'm not that familiar with your engine. I'd shy away from any 5W30 with that engine, though, regardless if it's a full syn or not.

I'd echo the GC ("German" Castrol Syntec 0w-30) recommendation, should be great for your WRX (I'll be using it in my STi in a few hundred miles).

My first UOA was on Mobil Drive Clean 5w-30:

I've also run Motorcraft Semi-Synthetic 5W-30 in my STi (2,500 mile OCI), UOA here:

Note: Both the Mobil Drive Clean and the Motorcraft sheared a bit out-of-grade, both in a short 2,500 miles.

And I have Mobil 7500 Semi-Synthetic (10w-30) in the car now, UOA to come soon. I'm curious to see how it held up compared to the previous two oils.

But again, GC would be a good choice for your WRX, IMHO.

I had the same issue when I ran RL for 5k miles. More consumption, yet it's a less volatile oil. Makes no sense. It's hard to pin point the reasons for oil consumption many times. I'd run Amsoil 5w-40 in this.

I may run the 5w-40 in my new motor as well. I run mobil 1 EP 10/30 and also having oil consumtion probles but not as bad. I run a loose motor as well with forged pistons so a little is acceptible. I will go thew more oil the harder I drive it as well. I see no blue smoke while under boost or at Idle. I am debaiting about going with eather amsoil full syn 10w/30 or 5w/40. You will just have to see what the motor likes.

I'd try the Mobil 1, 10w-40/EP or their 5w-40. The API SJ rated, Mobil 1, 10w-40 motorcycle oil would also be outstanding in this high temp application. It has the best high temp properties of any of their 40wt formulations.

The Sube turbos seem to do better with the slightly thicker lubes, instead of the low viscosity, ACEA A5/B5 stuff.

If you are willing to stick w/ a 30 weight, WalMart's SUPERTECH Synth is A3 rated, makeing it a thick 30 with HT/HS>3.5. I like it a lot and consumption is really low in my test car, a 20 y/o Audi w/200k. I hit +170c OT all the time. Anyway, the ST Synth 10w-30 is really smooth and cost is silly low...$2.40/q. I am taking it to 8000mi...topping with M1 T&S though, not wanting to buy another $12 jug...yet.

You two have the same engine, right? 2.0L turbo in a Subaru and a rebadged Subaru? If the 5W-40 worked great in the Saab, I'd imagine that it would work great in the nearly identical WRX.

EDIT: Please correct my if I'm thinking of the wrong model that's the rebadged Subaru. Is it the 9-2 or the 9-3?

It's the 9-2 you were thinking of.

it can take up to one entire oil change interval for oil consumption to stabilze when switching from one oil to another. the additive package varies from manufacturer to manufacturer; the new cannibilizes the old oil build-up in the ring groove area and allows consumption until it is replaced by the new product. you need to run at least two consecutive oil changes with the same product because the first run is like dealing with a new engine.

Call Dave at Red Line and ask about their experience with the Subaru Impreza WRX. There is someone in our area running this car in shalom (spelling?) racing using RL 5w-40 but his problem was a very tiny leak in head gasket that took several doses of GM "Cooling System Seal Tabs" to solve. He claims that when the head gasket leak stopped his oil consumption went down.

TSUV 5W40,M1EP 10W40,Rotella-T Synthetic 5W40 are all going to be things worth trying!!! If you want cheap try Chevron Supreme or havoline 10W40!

Ok, here's the strange thing. Recently, I took my car in for some warranty work to the dealer. After that, when I changed the oil, I noticed the dealer had changed the oil in my car unbeknownst to me (I always change my own oil).

Now, of course, they put dino oil in for sure. During that period, I saw almost zero consumption
until near the end when I lost about 3/4 quart (about 3700 miles).

So what does that say about my engine? That it would like the thicker 5w40 synthetic or maybe a synthetic blend instead? I would have thought synthetic would burn off less than dino juice, not more.

It would help to know (for certain) what oil your dealer put in. Looking at the PDS wll reveal key points such as flashpoint and volatility. We can then compare to that of M1 5w30.

Or, you could have been easy on the car for the first 3k, then started to rev it up in the last few tankfulls?
