Mobil 1 Undeserved Bad Reputation?

I agree Shel. Tens of millions of gallons over Pennzoil, Castrol, Valvoline etc? Might be a stretch.

Pennzoil is the only one close. Mostly because RDS is willing to buy gallons.

I’ll see if the slide is protected or not. If it’s not protected in post it. If it’s protected, then it’s confidential. Annnnd I can’t.

@Triple_Se7en Just curious ... why would you recommend three different oils for the same vehicle and, I assume, the same driving environment?
The Theta 2s that Chris and I drive live longer on SP 0/5/10w40s and Extended Performance (EPs) 10w30s.
Thicker seems to help in most cases.

Mobil-1 ESP 0w30 meets or exceeds the SP Engine Tests Requirements
Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 meets or exceeds requirements of 'API SP' Industry Standard, which includes Test Requirements.

I've used Mobil 1 0w-40 in Mercedes, Volvos, and a Saab for years. It's an easy product to turn to and not worry. It keeps things simple.

I know it's not the elite level product it was in the early 90s, but I think Mobil works hard to keep a very high level of performance each time they reformulate and try to match their previous formula as best as possible. You saw that with the powerpoint when they first moved from PAO.

I'd trust Mobil 1 more than some of the other big name has produced oils to be honest.

I experimented with a few oils, I been a long time user of QS/Pennzoil products mostly QS High Mileage but I tested Valvoline Full Synthetic High Mileage and Mobil 1 Full Synthetic High Mileage.

Mobil 1 has performed the best for me, no oil consumption in my Toyota compared to the other 2 oils and an increase in mpg. I switched all of my vehicle to Mobil 1 going forward.

A lot of the Mobil 1 hate comes from a youtuber who has flip-flopped his positions multiple times and originally thought TBN and high moly content = the best and didn't understand the difference between the different types of moly, his ego is too high for him to accept he is wrong and his fans fall right in line with him.

If I bought a new vehicle calling for 0w20 or even 0w16 or 0w8 I'd be very comfortable using any name brand
synthetic sold at WM, AZ, AA etc...but none more so than Mobil 1. In fact....if I could win a 'lifetime supply' of any store bought synthetic I'd choose Mobil 1.

I don’t buy Mobil 1 oils unless they are on sale or clearance which is almost never. The vehicles that exclusively or mostly use Mobil1 oils that i have personally seen with the valve cover off, the insides were super clean, no varnish. This included and avalanche I used to own where the previous owner had records of using M1 5w30 since new. Not saying other oils wouldn’t do the same. Just an observation

Full disclosure - while I use Mobil 1 oils , I don’t consider myself a fanboy as I’ll use a better oil if I find it for a competitive price . The above topic is targeting negative opinions of M1 oils based on VOA’s , what they read or saw in a video , etc. without understanding the following : 1) Oil testing facilities who use different testing methods versus the testing methods Mobil itself uses . 2) The number of negative comments regarding M1 oils from seeing VOA’s / UOA’s of key analysis indicators showing low amounts of additives when Mobil is using key additives that don’t even show up in VOA or UOA reports … I’m just suggesting to pay more attention to how your vehicle runs , how wear numbers look , etc. in a UOA versus the additives that show up as low in a VOA / UOA report . This applies to Pennzoil , Castrol and Valvoline equally as additive technology may possibly put pace the oil testers ability to properly test newer for more innovative additives coming from outside of the traditional oil industry.

I'm an old time Mobil 1 user. I first started in 1976 and I ran it exclusively in a 1975 Fiat 128 4 speed manual that used to run 20W50 conventional or 10W30. Back then I think M1 was 5W20 but I did not care, ran it anyway. That little 1290 cc motor turned over at 4200 rpm @ 60mph and trust me I did not settle for 60mph on the highway. Went to Florida and back from Toronto and ran it till the rust took it away. Never oil consumption or anything oil related. I figure if that oil could preserve that engine it was fine by me. I think that car went over 100,000 miles maybe 150,000, can't remember now.

What do you consider a good price?

If you have the "utmost respect for this superb brand" might it not be worth a buck or two more for a 5-quart jug compared to lesser oils?
Glad you asked. The bogey is below or near $23 for five quarts of Dexos 3/1 0 W 20 in a brand like Quaker State or better. I include Kirkland and Supertech in the consideration set

Been using Mobil 1 since 1975...

Here’s an example. This was just posted 3 hours ago on a Facebook post on a high mileage Toyota page regarding high mileage motor oils.

Supertech outperforms Mobile 1 garbage by far in all testing. Mobile 1 is way at the bottom of all testing against all big name oils. Amsoil of course lands on top I. Legitimate testing over all other oils as it's 1 of only 2 legitimate actual true synthetic oils. I would not put Mobile 1 in a lawnmower let alone my car.

🤣🤣🤣
