I received an email today highlighting a Mobil 1 oil change at a nearby stealership. They reduced the price from $62.95 to $54.95 for a non-V-8 and from $69.95 to $61.95 for V-8 engines. Seemed a little high to me, but then again I am used to doing myself for about $30 all total.

There may be another wrinkle in those offers...watch the fine print for disposal fees and a statement that the offer is for "five quarts of" XXX. Many engines require more than 5 qts.

You are also paying for their time/labor, obviously. I wouldn't call that a "steal"...it's about on-par with Jiffy Lube or whatever.

I never could figure out why people pay so much for synthetic or regular oil changes. I mean i guess i could see if you're disabled or if you live in the city with no room, but it's a lot cheaper to diy. $45 for ramps and like $5-10 for some wrenches and your set, $26 for a syn change from then on. (if buying filter and oil bundle deals)

My Dad still gets his done professionally. He's a total gearhead but he's just too lazy to slide under the car and deal with it. He'd rather pay some guy at the dealership or Jiffy Lube to handle it.

Dads can do that kind of stuff just because they know better.

The dearlership I work at just had the price go up. $83 for a mobil1 syn oil change, after tax, shop supplies, and hazardous waste removal.

Up from $67.

People pay it becuz it is convient and just don't want to deal with it . Same reason people call the plumber when there's a sewer back up. I'm not gonna go out and rent a machine for 35bucks and pick of all that [censored] that spilled. I rather make a simple phone call and pay someone.

For our E350 vans, we used the local Ford dealer's "Fuel Saver Plus" oil change...$29.95 for 5w20 Motorcraft semi-syn, Motorcraft filter, tire rotation, top up all fluids and "multi-point safety inspection"...a pretty decent deal.

I wonder why they charge more for V8's? It's not unusual to see a V8 with a 5qt sump and a V6 with as many as 8qts.

If you do it yourself, of course it will seem high. Everything does. But $55-62 is pretty fair for synthetic oil change. Luxury car dealers charge $100+

The local BMW dealer told me that for most newer BMWs with the CBS, an out-of-warranty oil change is about $120 + ~$50 for a "standard scope," which is required for all services.
