I love how these threads play out

I keep seeing a bunch of Dannie Devito's in Twins after D-hare Arnn(snort)held throws the thug into the elevator.

"You mess with M1 and you mess with the whole darn family"

Just because they are currently #1 doesn't make them infallible or exempt from cranking out an occasional turd. Look at Toyota, supposedly the #1 car maker in the world at one point...

Yes and that means alot being the #1. Just look at Fram they are the leader in oil filters right??? Wow never thought of that being #1 means so much thanks again.

Mobil makes a great oil. It is the #1 synthetic oil company in the world. That wouldn't be the case if it "sucked" or was as bad as some say. In fact, I believe that it outsells the #2 and #3 combined (and possibly the #4) and so it's not just barely winning the synthetic war, but dominating it in sales.

Actually Fram does make very good filters, and some not so good. However, we have to compare apples to apples. We aren't talking about cheap dino, but a more expensive, premium product---synthetic oil. And so, a better comparison would be who is #1 in selling premium, expensive filters. I don't know the answer to that but all of the premium filters are at least good---even Fram's. Bosch, Mobil, Pureone, K&N might occasionally come out with a bad batch, but that doesn't mean everyone of its filters are bad. On the whole they are good to great filters. Likewise, how can anyone say that any premium synthetic is bad?

I realize that being the #1 seller of a premium product doesn't mean that it is the best (and I never said that Mobil was the best). However, it definitely doesn't mean that it sucks, is bad, etc. like several people here have claimed or insinuated. How can we best explain it's dominance in synthetic sales? I believe their marketing is excellent, they have all of the big car names backing them (with one exception), over 50% of Nascar vehicles use Mobil, and of course they make very good products, some better than others. Also Mobil synthetic is the factory fill for corvettes, several uber Mercedes vehicles, and all Porsches since 1996 (over 40 cars total). Stats like that would impress practically anyone.

How exactly (by what mechanism) is any slight difference in oil density going to create a noticeable difference in engine smoothness? While we're at it, it might not be a bad idea to define density to make sure were really talking about... well... density.

And can you give some specific example where you think density is making one oil "smoother" than another?

I think you're under the impression that science sells oil. People will spend what they want on what they want. Like I said earlier if M1 expects EP to sell, they'll have to give a better "experience" to the oil user. It could mean anything really but this is a business, not a science fair.

As far as the science of it goes, oils are pretty much the same in all the most important ways. What oil's users can't use the "never caused a problem for me" defense? Some oils are just a little better in an area or two for the average user with the average OCI. This is why the "feel" is used so much by the majority of ones who buy this stuff.

You asked for a proposal so I was just proposing that density could be a factor. In your hypothetical 10 vehicle test, you left the possibility open, that viscosity differences might be perceptible to people, "The same would likely be true if we used oils of varying viscosities." I agree with you.
I'm saying that density differences may be just as relevant as viscosity differences.

The facts are the facts , Mobil 1 5w30 is an inferior product.

The FACT is that that's your OPINION, nothing more. Please feel free to spend your next 25 posts showing us all the engines that have failed early as a result of M1 use.

Actually all of the engines that friends and family have that I know uses Mobil 1 5w30, are lasting quite well. Some over 300K with extended OCIs.

Ah, Tig

He didn't say that engines would fail. He just said that it was an inferior product.

Now he didn't say inferior to what ..but..

The orange can of doom can be compared to Mobil 1 5w30 if you use your standards. It's an inferior product where its inferiority doesn't manifest itself in the environment that it functions in.

You just need to apply a little boost once in a while. It's sorta like the "pulse" technique in message board thread hypermiling. This should be good for 3 or 4 more pages now.

API along with ILSAC set test and standards for engine oil approvals one being SEQ IVA test , this is a wear test. This test is run in an REAL engine too measure wear , candidate sample must be under 90 microns of wear , Mobil 1 result 186 microns of wear THAT IS A FAIL. Mobil never denied that they failed this test because THEY DID. How much more proof do you want , you really should do more research on this subject before spouting off things you clearly know nothing about.

elpolk and I both realized he inferred engine failure would occure sooner with Mobil 1 5w30 than other oils. elkpolk challenged him to prove that and I mearly stated my knowledge of the subject.
