Why wouldn't Mobil 1 Extended Performance be better than M1? You're paying more for it so XOM better make it better in some noticeable way

I'm not saying this is true, however it could merely be the bottle that makes it cost more, the printing on the bottle, or even the marketing. Mind you I did not say one oil is better than the other.

It all depends. If you want to change your oil every 10-15k miles, you may benefit from EP. If you change every 5k like me, it doesn't really matter what brand or type you use. All you can really do is wait till 200k miles, then if there's an oil related failure, you can say, oh well I should've listened to 10% of BITOG members and gotten a different brand since mine did not meet my driving criteria.

I must say I'm shocked at this response. I was referring to the claims that this or that oil "runs smoother". It's ridiculous enough when referring to oils of different viscosities. I'm at a loss for a word to cover what it is when referring to oils of the same viscosity.

I suspect that EP *is* a more durable oil. But that wasn't the point. (Which was entirely missed, it seems.) I just think that it's amazing that so many on this site, as opposed to run of the mill car forums for clueless owners, are credulous enough to post all the ridiculous drivel about this or that oil "running smoother" than another. What are people thinking? That some oils get lumpy with use?

How can any reasonable person take *anything* said on this forum seriously with people posting stuff like that, with others just implicitly agreeing?

So your saying that you don't believe that some engines "like" some oils better than others, and will run better on them? If you say that you don't believe that then I can't take YOU seriously. My cavalier definitely ran nicer on PP than it does on the Maxlife.

I'm saying that if we took 10 identical engines and ten different oils of the same viscosity and ten people who have made claims on this board that this or that oil "ran smoother" in their engines and got them to rate the smoothness of the engines in a double-blind experiment as we rotated the 10 oils amongst the 10 engines, the 10 subjects would be unable to tell the difference between oils.

The same would likely be true if we used oils of varying viscosities.

Oils may vary in various engine protection properties, durability, and even vary slightly with respect to fuel economy. But thinking you can eyeball the difference is just silly. What mechanism do you propose mediates the alleged effect? Be specific, please.

-Steve

Edit: I think someone posted a link a while back to a study demonstrating that a wash and wax also makes cars "run smoother" or some such?

Sure it does. It's a licensed testing appriattice.

I believe the license was officially issued back in 1946 on a small dirt road somewhere between El Reno and Chickasha.

Depending on who you want to believe and how those tests were performed, or even the particular batch of Mobil 1 tested after hurricanes disrupted their supplies. They more than likely are not representative of M1, and the Castrol/Valvoline marketing hype is tantamount to Captain Ahab throwing a harpoon at the mighty Great White Whale Moby ****...

If Mobil 1 is so bad, why is everyone always comparing themselves to Mobil 1? lol

And why do multiple manufacturers use it as factory fill? To me that is far more significant than posts from a bunch of folks playing amateur tribologist on an Internet hobby site, commenting gravely about Fe numbers on consumer grade used oil analysis from labs whose numbers clearly don't agree with each other. There's even plenty of evidence extreme inconsistency in numbers out of the same lab.

One thing I've noticed on this site is that contributors with real credentials are few and far between. And that those who do possess credible credentials and experience tend to say very little, and are notably careful and conservative about what they do say. Meanwhile, those without them are most free with their opinions.

A.J. Amatuzio states that he knows a company that does make products that outperform Mobil 1."And you know which company that is. Mobil makes a very goodoil, but I am here to tell you that that it does not outperform AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils.

Steve, thank you for taking time to make a very sensible statement. Unfortunately you are right that the more knowledgable ones here tend to make fewer remarks. A lot of them don't have an axe to grind, have been using Mobil for decades, or aren't employed by competing companies

Mobil makes a great oil. It is the #1 synthetic oil company in the world. That wouldn't be the case if it "sucked" or was as bad as some say. In fact, I believe that it outsells the #2 and #3 combined (and possibly the #4) and so it's not just barely winning the synthetic war, but dominating it in sales.

Very well said. I've been changing oil for 50 years and have never felt this smoother thing with an oil change, or one oil is noticeable smoother than another with the same weight.
