I am putting a transmission cooler on my 03 Tacoma. I expect less than a quart of ATF will need to be added after the cooler is on. I have a quart of unopened Amsoil ATF already. Is it safe to add it to the Toyota type 4 that is already in there or should I just buy some Toyota to add to it? Or is there really not an answer to this one.....mixology is an unknown....

Thanks for any input

I have an 04 Tacoma that specs T-IV. I wouldn't use the Amsoil in it, just go to the dealer and get another quart of the T-IV stuff. Mobil makes 3309 which is supposed to meet the Toyota spec, but I've not seen it readily available, so I stuck with T-IV. Also, for your warranty's sake use the Toyota stuff. Just my opinion!

Sorry unDummy I disagree with you once again.
I think that if his manual says use T-IV then thats what he should use. Those (and other) fluids are designed specifically to work with the materials that are used in the transmissions and in the short term it might work ok on something else but perhaps in the longer term problems could arise.

There would technically be nothing wrong with mixing the fluid. Your transmission absolutely will not know the difference. I would do it. (I'm running 50/50 in a new Honda Odyssey right now)

If it bothers you from a psychological or at a physiological level, go buy the Toyota fluid.

It's perfectly acceptable to mix the two. I've been doing it for a while with fantastic results.

My 2002 Tacoma is speced for D3 when i did my cooler i flushed out the whole system with Redline D4 with no ill effects then when i moved to Texas i drained what was inside the pan and replaced it with Amsoil Universal and so far so good.

Thanks for the input guys. I ran teh amsoil in my 01 Tacoma and really liked it. The 03 is supposed to use the Type IV and know there is not an exact match for it. I still haven't made my mind up about running full amsoil atf in it.
