Methy Mike and the Sketchy Bunch

You are very correct, but I don't think that fully explains the problems, though. I think there's also been much too much "follow your heart" type of moral training the past few generations and not enough "do your duty." (Purposefully not mentioning religious concepts.)
Yes, the demonization of approaches that weren't endorsed by these "bastions of empathy", that these people weren't "progressive" enough, with various labels tossed around depending on the subject, went a long way in quenching dissent and elevating their policies. This also became endemic in our educational institutions.

Not to mention Disney movies, LOL. I summarized the "follow your heart" message in Moana as, "Your parents are stupid and you should do whatever you want... like running away with that sketchy dude with lots of tattoos."

Be right over. I might be kinda late. My pawn broker called and said he was missing me, LOL.

I'm in the same situation as you. Far enough away that I don't lock things around our place. Never had a problem, but it might be just dumb luck.

You'd probably feel bad for me and want to leave some things. You could check out my brand new $8K electical service in the garage though!

We live in a small, old subdivision with many who have lived here for many years. There is nowhere you can walk here from and the street doesn't go anywhere, so there isn't much unfamiliar traffic aside from the ubiquitous delivery vehicles.
There are also a number of older folks who have little to do other than monitor the neighbors.
They know who belongs and are quick to call the cops should they see anything untoward, and the local police will arrive quickly.
We don't even lock the house up unless we're going to be away overnight, a hangover from our days of having a Great Pyrenees, who wasn't about to let anyone other than us get into his house.
It would be awful to have to be concerned about the security of our house and cars on a normal basis.

Sounds nice what area is that? I'm over by Akron.
My roofer says "you have a hole in your roof" I said "you mean like a bullet fell out of the sky?"

Roofer: "No I've seen plenty of those .. this is more a branch landed then fell off, bullets usually stay stuck in the roof."

We live in what used to be country within easy reach of Hamilton, Middletown, Cincinnati and Dayton although it has since developed around us. When we moved here, there was a dairy farm and fields of corn and soybeans across the four lane that our roads empty into. These farms have long since become subdivisions and gas stations.
Our little enclave remains mostly untouched by time and surrounding residential and some commercial development.

Yes, these are generally all rather rough looking white folks, as you note.
My youngest son had to move recently due to THOSE kind of folks. He and the wife had bought a really nice sized older home in the center of their small town. The house was 100% remodeled before they purchased it. They lived there and had two children in the space of about ten years. He got so upset and tired of seeing THOSE same exact type , tough looking characters digging in his garbage cans, snooping around the sides of his and others houses etc.... He said it was very obvious that these were mostly homeless looking , druggies or alcoholics. Even if they were not committing crimes or break ins, that kind of thing can be really scary for a young father and mother who are working and raising young kids. They got really lucky and sold the house and moved very close to his In-laws house. Wife and I feel very much relieved that they got to move close to her parents in a better neighborhood.

Is moving a possibility? I mean the thieving scumbags will go to wherever their opportunities to steal are greatest. But if you had a piece of property that could be fenced and gated, along with ample garage space to keep the cars inside, it makes life more pleasant.

We're about a mile away from the closest subdivision (Lots of about 9k sq ft, homes around 3-3.5k sq ft). We only have three neighbors close by, on much larger lots. Two of the three are fenced and gated like us. The one who isn't gets prowlers on their video cameras looking for anything to steal. Their cars are in their garage, but they are feeling like it's a matter of time until something goes missing, plus more importantly it's unnerving to have scumbags prowling their property, who might decide to try and make entry into the house.

They are currently getting bids on a perimeter fence and gate.

Amusingly, a buddy of mine is about to list his place which checks every possible box I could think of, but at $1.65M, it's a bit out of my budget unfortunately.

I mean, yes, I could conceivably put up a wrought iron fence, but I am not sure on the aesthetics of it, given the size of my lot and how that would work in a neighbourhood where most don't have fences on their front yards (my backyard is fenced).
Yeah, in our area, I'm sure not all people with those types of fences that are an actual deterrent, are in criminal biker gangs, but the ones I can think of sure are...
Maybe that's your strategy, just look like you are a high level member without any of the real signs(you don't want their attention!), and the riff-raff won't know any better and leave you alone? You've already got the black vehicles ;)

I run a group in my neighbourhood, in a city which has fallen dramatically into disrepair, and we will often have a police officer, world-renowned in his expertise in CPTED - Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design - conduct neighbourhood walk-throughs; and he will always quip "privacy fences only give your intruder privacy while he's on your property". He observes that retail shops covering their windows gives similar privacy to armed intruders.

That kind of depends on the fence. A proper fence can be decorative, and deter your average Meth addict, and even more determined thieves that value not having their body skewered, without looking like a prison wall with razor wire.

Yeah, I'm thinking like this (though perhaps not as fancy):

These definitely do not afford privacy to intruders, while providing an obstacle to entry.

@OVERKILL
Do you have enough room for a gate and fence?

@SammyChevelleTypeS3 , I was in Las Vegas last week and there was one of those people rummaging through a trash can just inside the Bellagio. He was tatted, shirtless and consuming the left over drinks.
I saw the very same thing a few weeks back at a local "truck stop/casino" while I was pumping gas in wife's car. These Off Track Betting places with slot machines that we have popping up all over the place. We did get to vote on all of those "OTB" places before they started opening up. I was against them because I knew what they would bring. They won the vote. They got to build them ASAP. They opened up quick and then.... They brought in EXACTLY the low life dregs along with their level of street crimes. The area bums, the druggies and the drunks now all hang out all around them. Many of us knew that would follow and why we were anti OTB parlors.
Very SAD. I always feel bad when I see the real young ones in that condition. It is a shame because the people (officials) who CLAIM to be helping those street creepers are doing them more harm than good. Truly they are what is known as enablers. They are more interested in their "virtue signaling" and free publicity from the media (who love those type stories) to make themselves popular. Yeah. Here is an idea.
"Lets all give them free drugs and places to use them. Lets help them stay all strung out." What could go wrong? "We just give them drugs." "So they have no jobs, no places to stay or sleep, no way to feed and take care of their personal needs....?" "Yeah, but at least we give them drugs." In areas with street casinos and gambling. "What could possibly go wrong?"

It's all part of the plan.

It's all part of the plan.
The truly sad part is "the plan" has been tried all over for many years. "The plan" has been proven to be an utter failure time and again.

It is almost as simple as the signs one sees in parks and in the great outdoors:
"Please or Caution or DANGER / Do Not Feed The Animals."
Why? It usually comes back on the ones with the misguided ideas of helping. They usually get mauled or eaten alive.
