Yes, the demonization of approaches that weren't endorsed by these "bastions of empathy", that these people weren't "progressive" enough, with various labels tossed around depending on the subject, went a long way in quenching dissent and elevating their policies. This also became endemic in our educational institutions.
Not to mention Disney movies, LOL. I summarized the "follow your heart" message in Moana as, "Your parents are stupid and you should do whatever you want... like running away with that sketchy dude with lots of tattoos."

I'm in the same situation as you. Far enough away that I don't lock things around our place. Never had a problem, but it might be just dumb luck.

We live in what used to be country within easy reach of Hamilton, Middletown, Cincinnati and Dayton although it has since developed around us. When we moved here, there was a dairy farm and fields of corn and soybeans across the four lane that our roads empty into. These farms have long since become subdivisions and gas stations.Sounds nice what area is that? I'm over by Akron.

My youngest son had to move recently due to THOSE kind of folks. He and the wife had bought a really nice sized older home in the center of their small town. The house was 100% remodeled before they purchased it. They lived there and had two children in the space of about ten years. He got so upset and tired of seeing THOSE same exact type , tough looking characters digging in his garbage cans, snooping around the sides of his and others houses etc.... He said it was very obvious that these were mostly homeless looking , druggies or alcoholics. Even if they were not committing crimes or break ins, that kind of thing can be really scary for a young father and mother who are working and raising young kids. They got really lucky and sold the house and moved very close to his In-laws house. Wife and I feel very much relieved that they got to move close to her parents in a better neighborhood.
I mean, yes, I could conceivably put up a wrought iron fence, but I am not sure on the aesthetics of it, given the size of my lot and how that would work in a neighbourhood where most don't have fences on their front yards (my backyard is fenced).
Amusingly, a buddy of mine is about to list his place which checks every possible box I could think of, but at $1.65M, it's a bit out of my budget unfortunately.

I run a group in my neighbourhood, in a city which has fallen dramatically into disrepair, and we will often have a police officer, world-renowned in his expertise in CPTED - Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design - conduct neighbourhood walk-throughs; and he will always quip "privacy fences only give your intruder privacy while he's on your property". Maybe that's your strategy, just look like you are a high level member without any of the real signs(you don't want their attention!), and the riff-raff won't know any better and leave you alone? You've already got the black vehicles

I saw the very same thing a few weeks back at a local "truck stop/casino" while I was pumping gas in wife's car. These Off Track Betting places with slot machines that we have popping up all over the place. We did get to vote on all of those "OTB" places before they started opening up. I was against them because I knew what they would bring. They won the vote. They got to build them ASAP. They opened up quick and then.... They brought in EXACTLY the low life dregs along with their level of street crimes. The area bums, the druggies and the drunks now all hang out all around them. Many of us knew that would follow and why we were anti OTB parlors.
It's all part of the plan.
The truly sad part is "the plan" has been tried all over for many years. "The plan" has been proven to be an utter failure time and again.
