Yes, the demonization of approaches that weren't endorsed by these "bastions of empathy", that these people weren't "progressive" enough, with various labels tossed around depending on the subject, went a long way in quenching dissent and elevating their policies. This also became endemic in our educational institutions.You are very correct, but I don't think that fully explains the problems, though. I think there's also been much too much "follow your heart" type of moral training the past few generations and not enough "do your duty." (Purposefully not mentioning religious concepts.)
