Mercon V in older Ford Trannies?

I remeber ford used to state mercon v is not to be used in older trannies specing regular mercon. It is also proven that the older friction material was different, at least in the older AOD-E's vs the 4R70W's. So, why is ford magically back specing all old stuff to now use mercon v? And will it hurt old 80's trannies that used mercon, to upgrade to the v? I am so confused as they are contradicting what they originally said not to do.

Couple of years ago, I remember reading something on CVN that Mercon V is a semi-synthetic with a revised friction modifier package. Some people claim to have noticed better shifting with no more shuddering in AOD-E's, using Mercon V.

I say use it, I've been running it for a few years now in my Oldsmobile's TH2004R (1987 vintage O/D trans) it has over 200K miles and is holding up great even after years of occasional drag racing.

I am more concerned with the more fragile AOD, and E4OD. I have an E4OD that is in need of a change and I can;t find mercon.

Would Amsoil not be a good alternative in this case?

I don't think the Mercon 5 will do anything but help the trans hold up longer. I went from regular Dexron to Mercon, to Mercon 5. (Working in a Ford garage I got better prices on it).

There are certain Ford transmissions that do not like Mercon V, and the 4R100 is one of them.

Does Ford have any indication of changes in the formulation of MerconV? GM has their suffix for Dexron...Dexron-III(H), for example. Is there any literature showing how and when Ford updates the requirements for MerconV? The real question is whether today's MerconV is the same as original MerconV.

Yes.

Original red bottle Motorcraft Mercon V (XT-5-QMC) was superseded by the new black bottle, dual use Mercon V (XT-5-QM).

Ford says the black bottle Mercon V can be used in either Mercon or Mercon V applications, while red bottle Mercon V can ONLY be used in Mercon V applications.

Red bottle Mercon V XT-5-QMC ceased production in July 2007, but there are still cases of it out there.
