Hallo all,

I have a mercedes e220 cdi (OM 646 LA engine ).

acea uses This verry engine for wear control test for all acea ratings:

http://www.aftonchemical.com/Lists/Brochure/Attachments/40/Afton_Lube_Spec_Handbook_2012.pdf

page 81 I believe.

the thing is wear limits on the components of this engine are the same for a3/b3 and a1/b1.

So if I switch over this engine to mobil 0w20 (rated a1/b1).
The engine must be fine, because it is tested using this oil, and must not wear any faster then a3/b3 oil.

I am thinking about switching over towmorrow.

What are your thoughts

Not sure why you would do this. Does that oil meet the MB specs of 229.x for your engine?

no it does not anny mb 229.x or 228.x oils must meet hths 3.5

however this engine has demonstrated in the wear tests it can use it. as wear limits are identical

This is the kind of thing I am considering on my V50 diesel.

The E Class with the economical and powerful 2.2 Diesel engine is a car I would like to have next budget permitting.

I will let you go first!

For a diesel you'll still want to run a deisel spec', either C1 or C2 in a sub HTHSV 3.5cP oil . These oils still have a HTHSV greater than 2.9cP and they're all 30wt oils.
And if one is going to experiment with lighter than spec' oils it's alway prudent to make sure you're still maintaining adequate oil pressure when the oil is fully hot.
