My 1988 300e 3.0 has the same op gauge. The gauge it self only shows up to 3 bar. I installed a set of after market gauges to see what was going on, but have not hooked up the op tube due to the sender being behind the oil filter. Will install during next oci.

Hi Caterham, just like 660mag said, there is nothing wrong with the gauge, it goes from 0 to 3. But I once herad that the actual pressure can be higher (up to 5 or something like that). I guess mercedes figueres that there is no to know.

Oh and I forgot to say Caterham: I have never seen any Shell Rotella T5 0w30 here, only the shell helix.
Don t you think that the GC 0w30 has adequate phosphorus level? It has been on the market for a long time and is still labeled SL.

I am thinking ot GC or Mobil 1 0w-40 new life. Have you got any idea why still many people (including Mercedes-Benz and people from shell and castrol advise me to stoch to the manual and not go down one grade? What can be the downside? On ths forum and the 10 capters on is homepage, I get the impression that there are onl advantages.

Thanks, Peter

I'm sure the GC has an adequate P level. What I don't like about that particular oil is it's lowish 167 VI. If you can find a 30wt oil with a VI of at least 175 I'd consider that but I don't know of one in Europe.

The main advantage of a lighter oil is of course on start-up which is why I prefer Mobil 1 0W-40 new life with it's 185 VI. It's lighter on start-up, as much as 12% at 0C to GC. To me it just seems counter-productive to go with a 30wt oil unless you are also getting the benefit of a lighter oil at all oil temp's.

Thanks Caterham,

I dont understand how mobil 1 is lighter on start up. The M1 has a visc of 85 cs at 40 degrees celsius and the GC a visc of 72 cs. 40 degrees is a warmer than the normal starting temp, but still the GC seems lighter to me. What do I miss here?

I am still trying to find out if indeed a lighter oil at all temps like the GC would procide me with benefits. Dr Haas sais yes of course, but what is the down side of a lighter oil and slightly lower pressure?

Still doubting about M1 or GC. Dou you both consider HD oils, like you mentioned earlier?

Thanks

M1's KV40 spec' is 75cSt not 85cSt. It's KV100 is 13.5cSt
If you plug the values into a viscosity graph you can determine the kinematic viscosity at various temp's. They are accurate extrapolating down to at least 0C.

Thanks. Sorry for my typo, M1 is indeed 75 at KV40.

So the visco graph shows that under 40 degrees the M1 starts being lighter than the GC, whereas at 40 degrees and above the GC is lighter (72 cs vs 75 cs for M1)? Is that correct?

Peter
