Buddy of mine bought a used '01 E320 that was supposedly driven by the proverbial little old lady.

Anyway, the car has 43k miles and the looking through the fill hole revealed rather obvious sludge. I just got him on ARX but what oil should he use for the rinse phase?

His manual says use MB approved oil but it didn't list a viscosity.

I know that GC or M1 0w-40 is ok for later but what's a good rinse oil.

Thanks!

Beacause of the duration of the rinse phase, IMHO I would not fuzz over the "MB spec'ed" dino oil which is almost non-existent in NA terms.

Instead, opt for some decent quality dinos such as Chevron/Havoline, CAstro GTX (GF-4 variety), run it and then switch back to MB approved semi-syn or full syn...

I have two jugs of Supertech from Wal-Mart waiting for that job. As Quest wrote, because of short run with this oil I think almost anything will do.

Gasp, do you realize that the E320 has an 8.5 quart sump?

For an Auto-Rx rinse, I'd go for either the Chevron Delo 15w40 or Pennzoil LongLife 15w40, as this engine is spec'd for M1 0W-40. In summertime temps, starting issues with the 15W rating will not be a problem.

I googled the E320 to determine what is the engine size.

Found This Great E320 Oil Change Thread with Pictures on a Mercedes forum. This guy did a very good job of documenting the proceedure.

Note that the filter is a vertical mounted, replaceable element, style & comes off from the topside of the engine. Also would be advisable to get a replacement crush washer for the drain plug.

I would go with any good quality GF-4 10w-30; the tighter viscosity range dinos should hold up the best. Mobil Clean 5000 would be my first choice, but Havoline and regular Castrol GTX are also fine. Any of the high detergency HDEOs such as Rotella or Delvac 1300 would also work well, but they might be a little too thick for that engine.

It won't be in that long, so I wouldn't get too intense about it or whether it meets the MB spec.

rotella T delvac 1300 delo 400 even penzzoil longlife all great oils for the MB for the rise phase and in the future as well! cost about $7.00 a gallon great bang for the buck !
