That map is accurate. It seems like everywhere I go I see a Ford Escape, Oh wait a minute never mind.

I'm calling B.S. While there are quite a few Outbacks on the road around here, there are loads more Accords and Camrys.

Gotta agree with you on that. I think the data is either inaccurate, or it represents some angle I cannot fathom.

I don't think we have any reason to believe it's inaccurate. What one personally sees on any given set of roads over any given time period is vehicles in use at a point in time. That's very different from what this article is purporting: that these are the most recent new car sales figures. The original article's title is "These Are The Most Popular New Cars In Each State" as opposed to this thread's altered title "Map of most popular car brands in each state". Further, the original article states:

In summary, I agree with other posters who claim that they see lots more of model X in their respected frequented area. However, this is much more indicative of: 1) sales volume of model X over a much longer time horizon and 2) overall vehicle maintenance costs, reliability, and durability of model X.

Also don't forget cars nearing the end of their body style/ model run, or those with similar body styles going way back. Also used cars trucked in from more wealthy areas; I believe this goes on here. When I drive 100 miles south to Massachusetts it's like taking a time machine five years into the future.

Sorry but I'm calling total B.S. on this. I looked up the US sales figures for the Camry and Prius from Oct to Dec 2012.

Camry: 100k units sold
Prius: 30k units

Then I looked up May 2013 YTD. Camry: 171k units; Prius 66k.

Even though those are US figures, there's just no way that Calif could be deviate that much from US figures, as Camrys are extremely popular here. Even the Accord is far more popular than the Prius. I think some magician conjured that map out of thin air. Don't believe everything you read on the net
