M1 FS/EURO 0W-40 vs Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40 - which would you run?

I agree and doubt it’s because of fuel economy alone. ESP X3 and X4 hold viscosity better and are under the same pressure for CAFE, although perhaps 911 oils are less sensitive due to lower sales volume offset by 0W-20 Macans. If anything the choice of VM is probably down to cost in FS which seems like a cheaper and higher volume product to them these days rather than a flagship oil.
Except they have the same stay in grade requirements:

And 229.52 is required to yield higher fuel economy than 229.5 and 229.51:

Also, other than Nissan GT-R I don’t think there’s a single car sold new for many years with FS 0W-40 as a factory fill.
Think Mercedes AMG still uses FS. The M279 specs 229.5 for example.

Mom had a 2006 ML500 and I use to use both oils interchangeably religiously.

Oil intervals for both were 8000km with a MANN/OEM filter. You’ll get what you need out of both oils. If I recall correctly the PP Euro has a better HTHS rating, I believe it’s 3.8 or higher, whereas the M1 is 3.6 or 3.7.

Pick your poison, both are great. But taking my butt science into consideration, the engine ran smoother with the PP Euro. Oh it also did great in the winters here in Toronto. Here’s a side profile of “Helga” the V8 beast! Was a great ride, air suspension and loaded to the brim.

The air struts were a pain here and there and costly to replace. Also, the power steering fluid reservoirs weren’t the best. All in all a fun gas guzzler. She was traded in for GLC 43.

True, but you can see many results where FS comes out at around 11.9 and ESP X3/X4 come out closer to 13. Of course, FS must pass "stay in grade" but it seems like a C student 😂. Maybe it's a B student considering Castrol Edge 5W-40 loses even more. Obviously this is not a scientific test without a VOA from the same sample and lab and UOA from the same engine.

@daveatthebill here are a couple data points re: ESP and FS that chris is alluding to:

FS is lower HTHS, barely even 3.6 but it holds up very well in terms of relative shear compared to competitors. However ESP seems to be even better in that aspect. It would be interesting to see a direct comparison test against PPE 5w40 but you're mostly hairsplitting at this point, between flagship oils with enormous R&D budget.

Some British cars have used it for a while, Lotus, Aston Martin, and McLaren still come with FS afaik.

Random derail:
Is boutique oil with higher virgin oxidation levels like Motul 300V and Redline not advisable to run for seal integrity in BMW?
Or is that an issue that occurs over decades?

Nah, it is not seal. Boutique oils are good. 300V is racing oil and oxidation over OCI is fine. It is type of additive used that might leave more deposits etc. during normal street operations. HPL for example is boutique oils are good, but their street oils are excellent over very long OCI’s. Their racing oil, BAS, is also streetable, but not designed for extended OCI.

Hey everyone,

I have a Mercedes with a V8 (non-AMG) that requires MB 229.5 spec oil. I'm located in Canada and have found two options locally on sale:

  • Mobil 1 0W-40 Euro (also labeled as M1 FS 0W-40)
  • Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40

Both meet the 229.5 specification, and from what I can tell, they cover similar certifications.

I mostly do city driving and don’t push the car hard. I'm planning to follow the MB-recommended oil change interval (around 10,000 miles), though I’m open to changing it a bit earlier. My main goal is to use the stoutest, most strong oil.

Given these options, which would you choose?

Thanks!

They are all very good oils. In your case, based on location and driving style, you will not see a diff in any of them. I would reduce the 10k service to 8k on any of them. Even good oil is cheap.
