I feel to be fair to the consumer,Mobil could have taken Amsoil's route. They could have had their "EP" line made with pao,and their standard line an "XL" version with group III and marketed the oils in that way.

I agree whole-heartedly. There is no way I'm gonna spend $7.00/qt for group III oil when I can get GC which is for less money. I say bye-bye Mobil. And by the way, I have not seen anything from Amsoil saying they use group IV/V exclusively either.

""Wear is only one aspect of a oil analysis and what that unit needs""

Of course I know that you do not have to post like I'm an idiot or any other Lay person on this forum??

I was ponting out with only one area (iron) wear that NO oil out at a cost/performance level will do any better that CVX at 1/4 the cost.

Oh course there is more to it than that perhaps 12-15 areas that can be compared.

Still at a normal 5K OCI any other high dollar oil would IMHO would have to run 3-4 times longer with as low/high numbers depending on what you are looking at to be something I would use.

Tom, did Hatco sell some of the first base oils to AJ Amatuzio back in the early 70's for their 10w40 product? Were you involved with that work?

Hi Terry,

Not base oils, we sold him the finished product in the early days. He was driver behind the project and the first real believer, pioneering a new market against much opposition from the majors.

That first qualified oil was a 10W-40 SE/CC based entirely on a diester (DTDA). I was working in the Quality Control lab at the time, so I was not involved in the formulating but was involved in the batch testing.

This thread has been the most informative heart to heart we have had at BITOG for a long time. I really appreciate Terry, Tom, Bruce and Mola (when he can participate).
Meanwhile my wife looks at me funny when I describe the latest scandal thread on BITOG

Tom, appreciate your frank disclosure, sharing and being at the beginning of getting REAL syn oils to the US PCMO market. I enjoyed the diester formulas.

Bruce , please understand,no offense intended, I communicate to "in the know" people the same way I do "laymen". I may adjust terms but the intent is always the same to share the truth as I understand it. My customers Professional and Layman keep coming back because of it!

Terry

for a second there, I thought the rumors of mobil 1 being group 3 was regulated to the "regular mobil 1" and not mobil 1 EP. anyone know the reasoning why there are two mobil 1's??

Yeah, lemme spell it out for ya': M-O-N-E-Y .

(As far as I'm concerned, rumors of EM going to Group III base stocks are still, er, rumors - which means they may or may not really be true. However, if it's categorically verified by EM to be true [a very big, "if"], look for the lighter viscosity grades - at least inclusive of 10W-30, 5W-30, and 5W-20 - to make the transition, too if they haven't already done so. Since it's obvious that BP Castrol has no trouble selling all the Group III-based Syntec Full Synthetic it can blend and bottle, even stubborn, got-a-burr-up-its-behind EM has to have eventually seen the handwriting on the wall: market realities plus the steadily improved measured performance of very severely hydroprocessed paraffinic base oils equals a marketing bonanza potential.)

The problem I have with this "writing on the wall" is that Mobil dominates the synthetic oil market, and they're making plenty of money.

Someone one the internet makes a post about the makeup of mobil1 and we are all to believe it.Show me some facts. I have learned to believe very little of read on the internet.
II come to this site every day to see what the latest rumors are.

Fred it appears we do have scientific proof, and the way Mobil is responding it appears to be true as well. Have you read the whole post? I know its long.

I read the original post, got mad, got over it wondering if the guy was real, it was verified he is who he says he is-complete with members of this board who know him personally and share the same buisness associates, his buisness can be found on the web, on and on and on... Don't you think if we could have disproven this accusation we would have? Read the whole post.

Technically a peer review or multiple sources are nice......NOT that I'm doubting Tom NJ or anything. Just saying second opinions, a jury trial, a face to face, a lie detector, a good grilling from my wife....usually bring out the whole truth and nothing but.....

I think Mobil's inability to directly answer this question IS the answer we feared. It would be very easy to put this to rest if they were correct in their assertions.

It appears they are not.

Not much more Tom can do. If he posts printouts from his instrument, we still wouldn't understand. If he explains, some will disagree. Even if we agree, it would be argued that other viscosities would have different results. Or the formulation could change. Or the sample could've been contaminated. Or whatever.

In the end, there's nothing new under the sun. If you want to believe it, you will. If you don't, you won't.

Me? I don't use synthetic, so this thread is one big

for me.

I've asked Mobil this question before. They always stated Group IV and V. In fact one email I sent them asking this question my response was "No! Group IV and V only!!!". Now, they won't say anything other then "it's a fully synthetic". So what does that tell you?

As long as Mobil continues to add more cars to their list of "factory fill", I highly doubt they care about the small % of us that do!
