Funny, some BITOGers told me break-in isn’t real in modern engines.
Not exactly. The argument isn't whether break-in occurs but whether this early material causes additional wear of the engine. The argument is that there are millions of automobiles on the road today which did not have a break-in service and engines aren't failing left and right.

In one of Lake's recent videos, he had a slide showing what happens to wear metals when 0W-20 and 5W-30 shear out of grade. At the beginning of this presentation, he mentioned it, but never showed the slide or discussed it. Bottom line from the earlier video, as long as 0W-20 oil stays in grade, wear metals stay low, but as soon as it shears out of grade, wear metals increase quite a bit. When the 5W-30 shears out of grade, the wear metals decreased slightly.

Added chart and corrected some data:

Bottom line from the earlier video, as long as 0W-20 oil stays in grade, wear metals stay low, but as soon as it goes out of grade, wear metals increase quite a bit. Similar results with 5W-30 going out of grade, but the wear metal increase was significantly lower than 0W-20 having gone out of grade.
Exactly. A sheared 20 grade is bad. A sheared 30 grade still protects like a non sheared 20 grade. It’s all about the headroom.

IIRC, in this same video he says that most 5w30s shear down to 20 regardless and he suggests just moving to 5w20 because of its ability to resist shear more than a 5w30.

Touched on the wider the gap between both sides of the w (A)w(X) the more prone to shear.
