Recently Dodge extended the longest warranty OCI for my ride from 6K mi to 8K mi. This is with no recommendation of switching to synthetic. Could GF4/SM or GF5/SN dino go that far?

I wouldn't go any longer than 5,000 miles/6 months on a quality conventional oil. My owner's manual for both my Toyota and Pontiac both state this as well. Conventional is pretty cheap to change every 6 months. I go four months on my car with conventional because of all the short trips that car sees.

Go check the UOA's here to see how various conventionals perform.

Depends on the oil and how the car is used. Most people do not keep their cars long enough to matter and who cares about the second owner!!!

I know when SN first started coming out, and VOAs and UOAs posted....their was speculation that the whole "synthetic" rage will become near nil.....as time goes by, the EPA and etc other "governing bodies" are going to be switching up the oil formulations and it's gonna come to the point where nearly all oil is "synthetic" or sort, be it fully synthetic, or blend.....

So, 8k is the warranty for "regular" maintenance? And not the "severe" service, right? I've heard some dealers will throw the curve ball, "oh you were riding under severe service, you should have changed the oil sooner...."

I'd check the owner's manual again, and see what they classify as "severe" - most of the time the "severe" schedule is marked at 3k/3months....

depends on the car, depends on your usage. This guy here could have easily done 13K on dino with no accelerated wear:

But that's his car, his driving habits. I certainly wouldn't worry about following the manufacturer's recommendations for OCI with conventional. Just be honest with yourself about your driving habits and whether or not you fall into 'severe service'.

You mean to start a new thread? There's a "New Topic" button at the top of each sub-forum.

My 2010 Ford manual states that syn/synblend motor oil "...is not mandatory." Recommended normal service OCI is 7500 miles, so it would appear that Dodge & Ford agree with each other.

My stable of Ford vehicles gets MC 5W20 blend and MC oil filters at 6K/6 month OCI, i.e. $40 per vehicle per year...cheap satisfaction, reasonable maintenance.

For my short tripper it's 4 months or 4,000 miles on conventional oil ...which ever comes first .

OCI depends more on the engine than whether it's dino or synthetic. Most dinos perform as well as synthetics in most engines.

You can always do a UOA and make sure you're not exceeding the healthy OCI.

Incidentally my 85 Corolla manual specifies 10,000 miles on dino under normal driving conditions. And it is SF dino.

Toyota's recent recommendation of synthetics probably has a lot to do with the sludge problem in some of their newer engines.

Warranty and what is best can conflict.
Warranty is short term compared to the life many would like to get.
Safe OCIs are getting longer and longer. I do not prefer the super long ones with dino.

That's what I do as well. I am comfortable with it.

Depends on service, conditions and the manufactureres recomendations. I would say 5k miles is usually a safe number for modern engines unless we are considering those tiny Nissan oil pans.

I know my 07 and 08 Kia's rec'd 7500 mile OCIs for "normal" service, 3000 miles for severe. With no "requirement" of synthetics either......they kept it simple, basically any SL/SM API/SAE Oil, and they had the typical chart for ambient temperature, 5W-20,5W-30 for "all season" (negative degrees Fahrenheit, to 100+ degrees....) or 10W-30 for any "extreme" hot weather. With a notation of the "diminishing" miles per gallon for the heavier weight oils....though I rarely noticed a difference

I totally agree with that comment, however others on here disagree with that.

I have gone 8k dino oci's for the first 275K on my volvo...i'm on 338K now...i use synth for 10K OCI's. Maybe those long dino oci's are going to shorten my engine life!
