Hi, I recently put in a turbo in my is300 which is making a little bit more than 400rwhp at 12psi of boost. I have been using Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w30 from day one, and also using the same for the past 3,000 miles being turbocharged. I am thinking about switching to a different oil for better protection. I am looking at the regular amsoil, royal purple, or redline 10w30. what do you guys recommends? thanks!

Any good synthetic would be fine. PP 10w-30 seems to be getting some good reviews lately. Amsoil/RL/Mobil 1 would work great too.

so Mobil 1 isnt that bad?
ill probably stick with Mobil 1, if thats the case, because I can get them for half price right now from a good buddy of mine.
I'll probably try out amsoil once i cant get the discount anymore

so i should go with 10w30?
...also what intervals should I change the oil/filter at?
I dont beat the car to death, but it is my daily driver. thanks!

I would go with the mobil 1 0w-40 or 5w-40. Only because of the turbo and extra stress on the engine. Do a UOA to make sure its working. I would think 6000-8000 change interval would do it nicely. While a filter can last two changes you have a lot of money in this engine so I would change it every change. The Pureone is highly rated and reasonably priced at advance auto. I have had great UOA's using this combo on my Miata.

You need to determine your oil temp before deciding on an oil. You also need a UOA after things settle down to see how well the oil is working. Starting with M1 0w-40 is a good start....maybe for winter. For summer, I'd play it safe with a 5w-40 like M1 TDT or even M1 HM 10w-40.

gotcha, I called my friend and it seems that I can only get the discount on Mobil 1 5w30.

I have been doing soem research and am going to go with M1 TDT

my OCI will be a 7k or so which is about 2 times a year ,if that, and my local walmart sells them in a 4 quart jug for $22 ($5.50 each quart) so I think I'll try the M1 tdt for now.
only the best for my baby

Try Eneos Ow-50 Designed for high-output japanese turbo motors, Turbos LOVE it, On dyno tests while plotting PSI over Torqe and Horspower, we found that full boost was realized about 200-300 RPM lower, thus reducing turbo lag by .1 -.2 seconds
Nippon Oil also manufactures the OEM toyota lube as well and would be a safe upgrade
M1 is great but upgrading to 0-50 will give you more protection and better heat and coking resistance
Heres a link to specs http://www.eneos.us/web/0w-50.aspx

I would stick with the Mobil 1 in the 0W40. And if you can get it for half price, I would rather have M1 changed twice as often compared to Amsoil or Redline IMO.

I have been having some good luck running PP 10/30 in my motor. I have noticed less engine noise and consumption. I would also change it out at 3 (I do 2k) due to the added fuel that is blown by the rings.
If I were to use any M1 out there it would be the 5/40 turbo diesel oil.

Turbo adds heat and stress. I would skip the 30wts and head up to the 40wts.

Whats the oil temp like? psi?

Ill try to answer everyones questions...

dailydriver
its the stock 2jz-ge with lowered compresssion via headgasket ~9.5:1 stock is300 is 10.5:1

I am not sure what the oil temp or oil psi is. i only have 3 gauges: wideband, boost, and tranny temp

Eddie: i saw the 5w30 truck and SUV oil, but since summer is right around the corner i went with the M1 5w40, maybe when it gets colder ill do the M1 5w30 Truck and SUV or the 0w40

btw I just changed my oil this morning M1 TDT

this forum has a great community, thanks again!

here are some pics of my baby
also i just got in a little mishap today after I did my old change. I was late to work because of the oil change and drove a bit too fast around a corner and lost control and hit the side railing. my driver tailight is busted, the side of my bumper is beaten pretty bad, and worst of all the side panel above the bumper is pushed in pretty bad and its part of my frame. hopefully it will be able to be pulled out...sigh, well #@$%! happens and i am ok so all is good.

7k miles is probably way too long at first, I'd get an analysis from Terry Dyson and than decide. Diesel oils are usually quite good, but not always the best choice in gasoline engines.

Aftermarket turbo setup=unknowns as far as oil temps and wear. Play it safe, good choice.

Very true. I'd use something more shear stable than M1 5w-30 that would offer higher protection such as GC, Redline or Motul. There are many great oils out there though, just don't extend the interval too long at first.

Compared to what oil(s)? A 0w-50 is a thick oil and would most likely hurt spool. On a side note, what group is the base oil and how many VII's are used to get it from a 0w to a 50w?

GC 0w30 Gold and let the turbo cool down for 5 minutes at idle after a hard run before shut off....reduces turbo coking of oil

put on the largest plate and fin oil cooler that will fit with good outside air flow
