Lexus IS F Engine @ 220k miles

Oh wow that is a clean engine no doubt. I am, however, a little suspicious. He mentioned he’s had the car for 40k miles. That engine looks like it could have 40k miles, I would expect SOME valve cover varnish to develop within 200k miles but his engine had none. Either way, the engine is like new clean and that is a good thing.

I tend to chuckle when people say "hard miles". Most engines are quite tough when kept within their normal operating parameters (rev, temp, maintenance). I find neglect to be far more abusive to a vehicle than the manner in which it is operated. (within reason)
Would you consider taking the car to a race track hard miles? If so, they yes, this does have some hard miles on it.

I would consider track time less hard than neglect. I have numerous HPDE's and autocross events on my FRS, UOA's have been coming back with no surprises. So to me, track time is similar to a OCI with a lot of short trips.

Always appreciate these take down videos. Fascinating to see what you get when you start opening things up!

How many of these YouTube racers do you know that do UOA's? Also, if track time = short trip DD, then we drive completely different. On a typical short trip on any of my cars I almost never redline it. But hey, to each their own.

That is indeed a very clean engine, very impressive for 220K miles.

About 2 minutes into the video he talks about replacing all four wheel bearings, jump to 2:32 and he says the rear ones are shared with some other cars and these are some nice quality ones pointing at a wheel bearing from Detroit Axle laying on his tool cart 🤣

I know Detroit Axle makes a lot of junk, not sure about nice quality.

Not really anything beyond what I expected to see. Clearly a quality oil was used and changed at reasonable intervals.

I've never opened an engine's valve cover and seen more than, at worst, a light gold tint. I don't know why everyone expects varnish and/or sludge to accompany miles.

I never redline on short trips. Ever. I am also not shy about burying the tach on track, or bouncing off the limiter if I don't have time for an additional gearchange. I think where our difference of opinion is coming from is that I do not think redline, or high RPM operation is that "hard" on a well maintained engine. At least no harder than driving it on repeated short trips where oil doesn't even come up to operating temperature.
I'm basing my opinion off of UOA feedback. YMMV.

Okay, I see where we differ now. I appreciate the input.
