Lets talk about new vehicles

Yep. The process is simple.

Subcompact, compact, midsize?

Sedan, crossover, SUV, pickup?

Brand preferences?

Budget? We got this one, I think?

Then you figure out your needs? Towing for example? Commuter? Etc.

We haven’t seen any of this here.

All of the above!

Who is the well liked senior member here that said something like the Altima is one of his favorite rental cars? Cujet?

If I'm going to be driving 3000 miles, among the common rental fleet, the Altima is hard to beat with it's 36mpg at 90mph. It just fits me well, darn comfy seats. With the note that it cannot be the base model. Must have the good power seats.

Among better cars, the Honda Accord Hybrid touring drives nicely. The better Camry Hybrid is not quite as good, seems noisier and cheaper feeling, but good enough.

Best for long trips among the rental fleet is a higher end Chrysler 300, preferably with the 5.7V8. It's big, thirsty, smooth and pleasant. Although the V6 can return pretty good MPG if driven carefully.

In fact, if I have passengers, the Chrysler V8 cars are best. Roomy, enough power to climb long hills and no drama.

One other weird car I really like is the Volvo S90 T8. It's a plug in hybrid that is fun to drive and flat out moves. Car and Driver tested it at 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. I believe it.

I agree and did drive a 90 when they first came out. So are you driving one now...new one. Great post.
Seriously are you bothered by Chinese ownership? Meaning have things changed QC wise??

I wish I could afford to drive a Volvo... alas, tis not the case. However, the owner of my shop did just buy his wife a couple year old XC90 and it really is a tremendous vehicle. Long term, who knows. It's Swedish. However, being about as anti-European as they come as far as car guys go, Volvo is the one brand I wouldn't hesitate to own.

Chinese ownership? Pfff. If there's one car company that I'd be happy to give an injection of cash it's Volvo. The great thing about Geely is that they have no intention of interfering with Volvo's core business. They're focused on profit, yet they understand that you can't destroy a brand like Volvo in pursuit of the almighty dollar. Give the Swedes the money they need, and they will build you a vehicle that will knock your socks off.

The same can be said for Jaguar/Land Rover. They've been putting out some of their best work in ages, and they're owned by who? Oh yea, Tata Motors out of India. There's nothing wrong with spending foreign money to produce a good product. It all spends the same, at the end of the day.

Great post....
Thanks.

I learned one thing about suede seats. Some of the GC vehicles had suede bottoms on the seats.
You can't slide into the vehicle.
I had a great salesperson and he looked at me and said I know, I know.

Tomorrow im going to Lexus. Volvo and Merc.. All next to each other.
I will just have to up the budget..
Which Lex are you interested in?
We just got an RX450h F Sport. This one's a keeper.

The ES now comes in F Sport mode. Still front wheel drive, but a much better driver than the base model.
I highly suggest test driving the F Sport, whether you get an SUV or sedan.
I wish I knew this before...

Good luck.

The Grand Cherokee was a nice ride but I can hear the car editors saying it was outdated which I
don't think so it just isn't over the top. The Pentastar was silky smooth and I liked the dash as well.
The engine compartment had tons of room as well. The Limited X trim is nice but not over done.
I wouldn't want the Hemi but the V6 is a bit sluggish. Not that it is obvious to most.

I have prostituted myself to the lowest bidder and did unspeakable things to obtain the ultimate
long range road cruiser. Obviously I have failed and need your help.

What I require............

* Great seats for a bad back and I do not like tiny bottoms in my rides but- never mind... ; )
* Roomy- I hate when they put you in a cubicle like a Ford Taurus
* No Fords- I hate their seats
* No pickups- AWD or FWD fine- CVT is okay
* Very quiet with minimal road noise
* If hwy mpg is below 25 mpg- no thanks- The more the better- MORE!
* Hybrid ok
* Don't need a prestige brand- been there before
* Reliable- Sometimes I will put 3-4K miles on in one week
* Car-SUV-CUV okay
* Budget.. $25K-$55K NEW!

Thanks!
You could get a new BMW 330 for well under $50k. The current model has excellent seats. 255hp Turbo I4 with ZF 8 speed will net you 38 mpgs on the highway and it won't feel like it's a toaster.
