Let's Discuss Televisions

Sony 46" LCD, Bravia engine. Denon AV Receiver used to switch AV signals and distribute sound. Sony Blu-Ray player. Paradigm speakers. Dish HD with DVR. The Blu-Ray "upres"es regular DVD's, even they look really good on the system. But Blu-Ray... that is the same difference as between cassette and CD back in the day. Since the devil is in the details, there is a whole lot of fire and brimstone in the living area at my house. Give me a new BR disc, like Iron Man, or Dark Knight, a pizza, and a cool drink... you'll have no problem finding me. The walls shake, the couch vibrates, and it's pure eye candy. When Julianne Hough did an advertisement for ProActive because of acne, I knew it was coming months earlier from her Dancing with the Stars performance... it's that obvious. We don't go out much.. a special needs daughter, my wife works days, I work nights, our time at home is family time, and it is the best we can make it when movie night comes. Most folks aren't aware (simply because they haven't been involved in it), but there are many movie theatres that are not handicap accessible. We get close here to the real thing.

So now's probably not a good time for me to admit that I don't have Cable/Dish/Etc.?

In my case, it's not so much Luddite as it is thriftyness. I can't see tossing a perfectly good TV for an allegedly better one just because. I don't watch TV enough to justify the cost and most of the time when it is on, it's more for background noise anyway so picture quality isn't that big a deal. However, now that I have an excuse to buy a new-technology model, I will.

Then again, that's only because I don't think anyone sells CRT models anymore.

I have a 50" dlp hdtv, and it is painfull to watch football on my parents 32" crt from fifteen years ago.

I just bought a 37" 1080p Vizio lcd for a friend for 570 bucks, looked really good, I don't see how people who enjoy sports of movies can pass on a deal like that. that's tickets to a game for four, or two nights in a hotel. But unlike those, in five years you'll still be enjoying it. It costs me fifty bucks to take my family to the movies these days, eleven movies and it's paid!

The one I have now is at least ten years old. I'm not sure as my grandmother in law gave it to us when she got a plasma. The one I had before that was over 25 years old when I gave it away and it's still working at a friend's house. One of those big wooden cabinet RCA units. They're not exactly HD, but I kept the picture tuned. It was perfect for Nintendo.

We have a 52 inch Samsung plasma in the media room, along with a surround sound system, DVD, etc. We use it for the occasions that we watch a movie.

Upstairs we have a 36" Mitsubishi that's probably 10+ years old. Normally we just watch some news in the morning and evenings-not much else. It has a capacitor that's starting to whine so I suspect it's life is limited. We'll replace it with a plasma or LED when it finally gets annoying enough or completely fails, whichever comes first.

That's one of the reasons we put in a media room when we built the house. We prefer not to go to movie theaters for a variety of reasons, but on occasion do enjoy a good movie. I've probably spent less for my system than people who go to the theater/dinner a couple times each month.

Don't be jealous, now.

If you're thrifty, you'll also consider the 30+% reduction in electricity use compared to a (probably much smaller) CRT.

I had a Hitachi 19" CRT TV last me almost 22 years. I bought the TV in July 1984 and replaced it in January 2006 when the tuner decided to go south. No other issues with it the entire time. I thought about fixing it, but figured that with 22 years on it something else was bound to go.

I ended up replacing the Hitachi with a 27" Samsung SlimFit HD CRT TV. I ended up staying with CRT technology because the prices on Plasma and LCD was through the roof and their technologies still a relative unknown. i knew I could get at least 10 years out of a CRt set. For what it is worth, the Samsung was a dramatic step up in picture quality. It also allowed me to hook up my DVD player using component video cables and actually get the benefit of the progressive scan DVD player.

Someone gave me a 27" CRT - remote doesn't work. I don't watch TV so it's only used for occasional (once/yr) DVD rental. I have watched DVD's on my Samsung T22 computer LCD though ... plus the Stanley Cup playoffs too.

In fact, I've never purchased a TV before.

1080p 40" Samsung LCD 550 series.
(LN40A550)
bought Nov. 2008 for $950 incl. delivery and set up from CC.

(We watch Netflix rentals 90% of the time, and watch TV only to catch the news and a few random shows when Netflix movie is not there...)

Very happy with this Samsung LCD; upgraded from a 20" CRT flat Toshiba we had for a long time.
Great black levels, but needs playing with it and tweaking with the gazillion pic/color settings to get the best.
Brilliant PQ with OTA DTV channels, Blu Ray and DVDs and jpg pic sideshows. USB input, and 3 HDMI inputs.

sound is only average; but i use my amplifier and 2.1 speakers (see pic below) for movies, so it's not an issue; I don't care how news sounds when watching TV :)

Remote controls components from other major brands.

(AND this tv auto detects when that component turns on - i love this: i don't need a universal remote: just hitting play on the panasonic blu ray player's remote makes TV also turn on AND go to the correct HDMI input! turn the TV off and the Panny also turns off - cool)

Has much more PQ adjustments and features and same/better PQ (IMO)than comparable Sony LCDs. HUGE bang for the buck.

I parents didn't have a color television until somewhere around 1978-9. I didn't have one until 1980. It was a reconditioned (thinking) RCA (what was that signature title???) XLR (???) that was liquidated from either a hotel or hospital that's lease was up and upgraded.

The reason was simple. They were too expensive. No tightwad about it. While making money wasn't quite as hard back then, credit for anything other than automobiles or what (at the time) downgraded and over priced stuff that Sears had..w/their exclusive 20+% interest rate (no VISA/MC and they were much harder to get back then) just wasn't in the mix.

I had a 1978 BMW 320i before I personally purchased my first color television set.

All 4 of the TVs in my house are between 8 and 16 years old. They're all CRT Sonys, and they all still work fantastic. My 20" bedroom TV has outstanding picture quality for a non-HD set. IMO, Sony makes the best TVs with the best picture quality. That's only MY OPINION. I don't plan on upgrading until one of my current sets die. We used to have a 1982 Sony that finally died in 2001, so I may still have to wait a while for one of my current sets to die.

Oh yeah, accessories... Panasonic DVD players in living room and mother's bedroom (both were won in a sweepstakes). In my bedroom, I have a Sony VCR (poor man's Tivo), Pioneer DVD player, and Sony 5.1 surround system. Oh yea, and a PS1. Yes a PS1. And yes I still use it.

Have a 42 inch LCD Sharp for our main TV. In a way I fully regret buying it. One it's to big and really the money could of been spent better elsewhere. Probably saved us alot of money on movies though. Also have on 19 Orion and a smaller 13 Hitachi for the trailer.

I have a 21 inch Magnavox that I got in 1994 for my 17th birthday. I inherited, by marriage, a 21 inch Phillips TV from my wife. It's about 12 years old. I thought alot about buying a 42 inch LCD TV flat screen for my new house next year. I haven't decided yet. Everyone who comes over my joint disses my TV on how tiny it is.
