I have a 2003 Land Rover Discovery SE 4.6L with 120k miles. Currently I'm running Mobil 1 10W40 with a factory filter and it is developing a valve train click at idle when hot. Almost sounds like collapsed lifters.

The Owners Manual says to use Castrol 10W40 engine oil meeting specification ACEA A2.

Suggestions?

Jeff

Try some Rotella 5w-40. Or you could go the other way and try 5w30. I have had success both ways, thinner or thicker than spec'd to clear unwanted noise. Basically, trial and error. Just my 2c. HTH

Many have reported noisier engines on M1, myself included. Rotella is good stuff.

I absolutely loved this truck and wrote a couple tech articles on it in the past.

I would use a 5w40 HDEO; Rotella or Chevron will do. 15w40 will work in a hotter climate. I would Not use a 5w30. Mobil 15w50 also works well, in warmer climates.

It is Flat Tappet engine design. It need high ZDDP. Stick to an HDEO.

I certainly wouldn't be using anything heavier than Mobil 1 0W-40.

It's the Discovery II, not the newer Discovery III/IV or LR3/LR4.

These older Discovery's have a Flat Tappet motor and need heavier weight oil with high ZDDP.

Otherwise you are correct

Question:

What type of oil filter are you running?

Any other problems with the vehicle? (Just curious)

Just because an engine has flat tappets, does not mean it NEEDS high ZDDP.

Peted; As stated running the OEM Land Rover filter. Yes, there are a few other issues with it. It IS an old Rover after all lol. It's got good bones, it just has a hundred little things that need doing.

Caterham: The Owners Manual says to use Castrol 10W40 engine oil meeting specification ACEA A2.

I think I'll try the Rotella T6 5W40 and see what happens. WalMart has it for $5/qt too, so it's not too expensive.

On a side note my local AutoZone had Pennzoil Ultra on clearance for $3/qt.

I did run Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in mine one winter. Turned over much easier than with Rotella T. My '95 RRC didn't have the most aggressive starter though. I ran 15w40 (pre BITOG days) until a cold snap in November (15F)had resulted in a no-start... at least it was in my driveway. Caterham's thoughts about 0w-40 are valid; just monitor your rate of burn-off, mine was getting close to 500 miles a quart when I sold her off!
