Lake speed Jr inside Valvoline R&D lab to investigate their restore and protect

He's a long time member of this forum who has been doing 10,000 mile intervals with Mobil 1 for 40 years now with absolute success. No engine problems and multiple cars going over 300,000 miles.

Fair enough. My engine has a known issue with lifters/cams, and there is a large amount of speculation and testing which shows that oil can play a role. Due to this, I won't run long intervals in my truck. The risk isn't worth it.

In my previous engine which was a 3.6 in a Jeep, I'd be right behind wwilson and his 3.6 durango/charger.

I get it, R&P is cheaper. But again lets look at the actual cost. Should an extra $20 to $30 per year influence your oil choice when something like HPL offers so much for that price?
I don't do long enough OCIs in my vehicles to justify HPL or any other costly boutique oil. It typically gets changed based on time instead of miles on the oil.

Could be a chemistry synthesized from naphthenics. I don't know much about naphthenics. There are two good videos on Lubrication Explained about them. In one they mentioned the incredible solvency. In the LSJ video they said they work with US Universities and come up with theoretical molecules. They then send the idea to Mumbia and they synthesize it. Either way it doesn't matter if it works. Pretty cool.
Chemical companies, additive chemistry manufacturers and additive chemistry blenders all work with both domestic and foreign chemical companies and universities. ISU works on chemistry research for both the pharmaceutical and lubricant companies.

The STLE magazine and its publications, such as Tribology Transactions and Tribology Letters and the SAE are always publishing letters on new chemistry for various applications. The Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS) also publishes new lubrication chemistry on occasion.

The video really doesn’t tell us more than what we already know off of a spec sheet. I think the Valvoline R&P line probably does have a more premium add pack to help fight deposits. IMHO Mobil 1 EP, Amsoil Signature, HPL, Redline etc top of the line oil over a span of several oil changes will clean up most engines to a certain degree. I just think this new R&P oil is just a new premium oil their doing a lot of marketing as if it’s some type of wonder oil new to mankind.

Maybe not, but it's nice to see how Valvoline R&D verifies their new products.

Did they claim in the video that they are the only company making a product that cleans carbon from piston rings? If so, I must have missed that part. What made an impression on me, is that they say this product is designed to slowly reduce the deposits, so as to not overwhelm the filter. This seems like a sensible approach, and also one that's easier for them to achieve.

They actually did state they don't believe there is any other oil on the market that can do this. I assume they're referring to off the shelf oils and not HPL/Amsoil SS.

I just wanted to give it a fair chance. Glad to see the mods left this thread open despite the bickering. (y)

I liked the Valvoline engineers and the video as a whole a bunch.

However, did anyone else have it in their head that a place like Valvoline would be much fancier? haha. I wasn't totally surprised, but I certainly imagined it a bit differently. I also realize this was just a lab, but I guess you can say they aren't wasting your oil dollars.

Obligatory pic of clean cut guy wearing white lab coat and safety glass in spotless facility.

I still think it’s pretty cool that LSJ mentioned us in one of his online chats, even if he was saying that most of the BITOG crowd doesn’t like him. It shows that he’s reading the forum, and hopefully one day he’ll join the discussion here too! I personally enjoy watching his videos a lot, he’s the most knowledgeable oil guy on YouTube by far

Do you guys really see this as anything but a thinly veiled ad?

Edit: I'm in the middle of watching it now. Valvoline R&D is claiming that they are the only PCMO company that has their own engine test lab. Do we have anybody here who can credibly dispute that? I find it mighty hard to believe that XOM or Shell doesn't have their own engine test lab too.

That annoyed me too. Amsoil has their own engine test lab where they build high performance engines, put them through some brutal acceleration tests at high load and rpm, and then tear down for inspection. It's not Sequence III-H, but it's tougher than III-H. Mobil 1 has their own engine lab where they even run Sequence IVA. Granted, the testing at these majors is sometimes done to find ways to meet the spec at a lower production cost.

I’d think more on here like him than not. I think the haters just hate harder than the likers like. Likers might thumbs up the OP watch the video and move on while the hater is cooking in the thread making sure everyone knows how he feels.

I've been loving his channel since he rebranded. For the people who say this watches like an advertisement, people said the same thing when he did a Pennzoil video. I don't think he's getting sponsorship deals - just a enthusiast like us who wants to get into the science of how it works. That being said, I saw enough to convince me to stop running whatever is on sale and try to switch my fleet over to this oil once I depleted my stash. For reference, I just changed my Bronco oil last night to the Total Quartz 9000 5W-40 that was on blowout at AAP a few months ago.

Now that’s how real marketing works for anyone wondering. Your perception was altered or molded based on pictures you’ve seen in the media.
My expectations of "lab" are tempered by what they look like in Hospitals, which are generally extremely clean. Also, inside nuclear plants are spotless.

Every picture we've seen of the @High Performance Lubricants facility has shown a spotless operation.

A google photo from Infineum's Italy lab. This is what all the hospital labs I've been in have looked like cleanliness-wise:

Also, from what I recall in the Engineering Explained video of the Mobil test facility, it was extremely clean.

I've been working in various labs for the past 20 years (cancer research labs). Some of the best therapies in the cancer research field have come from the "dirtier" labs; hence, cleanliness of a lab is not indicative of how good the product is...

I enjoy the content. Just wish he’d
calm down a little.
