I believe the key wording is an “ASTM Certified” engine test lab. You can have an engine test lab in your garage, but is it ASTM Certified?

He also said that Valvoline is the only oil company that "still" does their ASTM tests in house. One can assume that Mobil, BP, and Shell, at some point did their ASTM testing in house but presumably, are now outsourcing those tests to contract testing organizations for cost saving purposes.
 
Good video & is exactly what us bitog's need to see to make our own judgement call on this product. Don't really have any plans to run it myself due to the cost and approvals. Wonder if they'll sell these in quart size but I doubt it.

The piston skirts look better with the R&P than what the BG photos show. In the BG piston photos, the skirts still have the same level of varnish. Notice the R&P photos. Also, look at how they jacked up the lighting on the BG second photos. (look at the white/black contrast ratio). In the Valvoline shot, it's two pistons from the same engine on the same table under the same light.
Unfortunately, this scheme is all too common for product "comparisons" as you already know. If your product was great why intend to "fool" your buyers w/bad lighting right.

I found it interesting that the ASTM certified inspection room required specific light and temperature.

Isn’t Mobil1 now claiming that some of their oils are removing sludge and varnish? I seem to remember their piston before and after visual aid/test, where they have a color coded chart. Could be wrong.

I probably would like to see some more evidence that restore and protect can do what they’re claiming it can do…I’ve never been a huge fan of before and after cleaning product photos (things like CRC intake/throttle body cleaners, etc).

Just three days ago a V6 Hyundai came into the shop for an oil change - the vehicle went two years and 35,000 miles between intervals - the oil filter was so heavy with sludge that it began falling apart under its own weight upon removal. The oil fill cap had more than a quarter inch of sludge hardening up under it. From what I could see under it the valve train looked like it was sitting in chocolate pudding. They signed a waiver, we did the oil change using just NAPA house synthetic. Within minutes upon startup we shut it down, the vehicle sat in the bay overnight - the next morning I went to show someone how sludged up and filthy it was under the fill cap, and…it looked completely different. I’d say 75% of the garbage that was stuck to that cap was already gone…under the valve cover looked like it had been pressure washed and nearing “clean” levels. I was completely stunned. Of course the engine probably blew up on the way home - the customers didn’t care, they were going to take their chances - but it was obvious that even NAPA synthetic with modern day certifications can do some serious cleaning. Then again, doesn’t Valvoline make NAPA house brand synthetic?
 
My vehicles of late mostly get M1 5W30 EP D1 / Gen 3 and < 5K mile OCI's using a Fram Ultra oil filter . The PCV valve gets cleaned or changed regularly as well . *Not sure what R&P would do for me that M1 5W30 isn't already doing (but I could be wrong) .

If you're using a high quality oil (Amsoil SS/Mobil 1/HPL) your rings are going to stay clean.
 
Let's summarize this:

1. Restore & Protect is unique in that it can clean piston deposits which is different than cleaning sludge.
2. It is not marketing. Stop saying everything is marketing when you don't know something.
3. Polar base oils are great at keeping an engine clean but are limited (type/quantity) at cleaning certain deposits. Hence "run clean".
4. No, not all oils can clean piston deposits
5. Valvoline is not just a blender and worked with a lab developing this chemistry. They also have their own in-house lab that can run any engine test and certify oils.
6. Having your own engine lab is vital to see nuance changes in real time.

What are Distillates (petroleum), hydrotreated light naphthenic? They are high quality naphthenic base oils with a low pour point, low viscosity index and highsolvency properties.

I just noticed this screen shot which was emphasizing his point about how an oil looks in a VOA means little.

Red Line has much more AW additives but the Driven Oil outperformed it.
