Keeping my old honda civic and want to try Valvoline R/P

Take the valve covers off and the oil pan if you can. That's where are the residual gunk will be. Then clean those up at the very least.

Does R&P *really* clean the guts/moving parts of the engine or does it break loose deposits in the sump and eventually send those to the oil filter?

I mean, I get this fascination about pulling dip sticks and making the OMG face for your YT video cause all the varnish is gone, but not a single engine ever has benefited from a cleaner dip stick. Just sayin.

Trade in value of the 2006 Civic is about 800.00 bucks. Street value who knows probably not much more.
When I traded in my 2006 Civic coupe for my 2016 Civic coupe in 2021 they only gave me $400. But I got a fantastic deal on the 2016 ($11,400 Canadian ($8000 US) Even almost 4 years later I’m seeing 2016 Civic coupes in my area for around this same price or more.

If it ain't broken, don't mess with it.

Instead of spending extra money on oil changes with fancy oils, buying an OEM valve cover gasket and a tube of Hondabond sealant will be a worthwhile investment. Needs valves checked around 200,000 anyway.

The R18 is a great engine. You can look at the stories online of people going 500k+ miles with these things.

Need to read the big long VRP thread to have more insight of what it's been doing for people.

If you don't plan to do much driving in it then the mfg OCI would probably be annually but that should be calculated by the Oil Change Minder I would think.

The OM manual I found online states:
"Replace oil 1 x per year if oil life has not expired after 12 months"

Been put up ad for selling my 2006 honda civic since I have my Lexus,
Both good cars.
today I just realized the civic still looking good and nothing wrong with it.
Glad you realized before you made a mistake. Sometimes our impulses lead us to a rash decision.
So I wash it and bought a new battery and air up the tires, checking fluid and just drive around. Got it inspection and renew the tag. Drive pretty dang good and smooth since i put 4 new tires not long ago.
A car is like the human body, take care of it it takes care of you. Small changes amount to a massive gain in the long run.
Made up my mind im going to keep it $2000-2400 is really nothing.
It really is not. If it’s paid off, which I assume it is, you have a winter beater, a hand me down and so much more. I have a Corolla and I love driving it, sometimes, wait for it, more than my 370Z. No ABS or traction control, analog controls, love it.
I want to try Valvoline R/P 5w30 , civic is 1.8L 194k miles with STP blue oil filter. How long my OCI should I try ?
I’d stick to 5,000 miles or one year. You can spoil an old gal, there’s nothing wrong with it.

I took my son's 2006 Civic off his hands. He was going to trade it in when he bought his new car and I'm like " no way" I'll buy it from you. It has 168,500 miles on the clock and I'm close to draining my 1st OCI of VRP. I'm going to run 3 more OCI's of VRB just because of its unknown maintenance history. It really isn't much of an oil burner though.

I drove a 2006 Nissan Sentra for more than 10 years, then gifted it to my son, to take to college. Bought my Civic in 2017, and it was a massive upgrade in almost every way (other than audio). When my son graduated, we sold the Sentra for $3500. It was a solid car, but not much fun to drive.

Just me, but I'd sell that Civic and be done with it. Feel good about providing someone less (fiscally) fortunate with a nice ride. 20 year old cars are on a knife edge; you never know what's going to happen next. A young woman bought our Sentra. She was so happy to find a car in such good condition (low miles, she said (105K)). It was a hard 105k, that's a fact. As she was getting ready to drive off, I peeled off three $100 bills and handed it back to her. Said, keep this for maintenance, and take care of it. Hope she did (take care of it).

R18 is very durable and I haven't heard of any sludge concern on it. You may not even need VRP, just some regular frequency HM oil change may be enough if it doesn't sludge (you don't even need to open the valve cover, just the oil fill hole may be able to tell you the cleanliness inside.

Your money might be better spent on new valve cover gasket, spark plugs, air filter, better oil filter, etc.

My experience had been that VRP is doing such a good job of cleaning my heavily varnished 2005 Odyssey (J35a7) that I would absolutely recommend it for any and all high mileage engine that don’t have major consumption or leakage.

I just bumped another VRP thread with pics of today’s update on the Odyssey VRP Odyssey. The additional cleaning it did over just the last 3 months and 2500 miles or so is striking.

VRP works fastest when the 1) oil is fresh and 2) engine is hot. If you do short trips, it takes longer to work its magic.

I also see ZERO EVIDENCE OF DEBRIS IN FILTER. I will post the C&P of the M1-110 once its wicked a bit. The oil is NOT dislodging debris, it is dissolving it and carrying it in suspension. The oil was pretty dark considering the OLM said I had 60% life remaining.
