Just a thought about these filter tears...

It's concerning that each Purolator product that Ive opened has shown signs of filter media damage!

The link below was started by member Stu_Rock. The link in his fist post is an Excel spreadsheet that collects all the reported filter tears (Purolator & Bosch) by members on just BITOG. I don't think he has updated it since mid May (his last log-on record), so there have been more reported than what the spreadsheet shows at this time.

Did an oil change about a month ago, went back to AC/Delco Classic.
I had 2 P1's left from a sale about 2 years ago. Threw them in the
trash.
Engine runs quieter now, probably 'cause of fresh oil.

Some stores would happily exchange them if you were willing to take the time. I agree with you on not using them though. I am happy with the Wix filters over the previous PureOnes. I have also used Fram Ultra 1 time, it seemed fine as well.

I exchanged a couple Puro's for a couple of orange cans. That's all I had left. I told the guy why too... he laughed and said I had it wrong the Frams were no good. Things and times change I said. I don't think he believed me but he gave me no problems.

With Wix made Napa Silvers seemingly perpetually on sale for 3 bucks and multple quality Fram offerings readily available if I want them, I see no reason to buy another Puro.

I have a P1 I need to cut that I just took off, I think it's a 3387 equivalent don't recall the number 10011 maybe?

I don't think the orange can is any different then it was a year ago. Its the same orange can that was bashed last year, but is now put on a pedestal.

It isn't any different. The orange can was bashed up until recently because the Purolator classic sitting right next to it had a better visual appearance when cut open, so there was a perceived quality difference.

FRAM build quality bashing was not based on any facts. I may have been a little guilty of this myself at one point and I feel bad about it, especially since I used their products for some time without ever having a single problem, and the same goes for family members.

Since the Purolator Classic is/was often the same price or less than the FRAM Extra Guard, many people here preferred it. Now that Purolator is having quality problems), FRAM looks like the better value, and is readily available without having to order a case of them online.

It also helps that a FRAM employee reads this forum and responds to quality concerns and technical questions. That shows a commitment to quality.

Purolator filters aren't being subject anything different than WIX, FRAM, or anyone else. There will always be the occasional defect with any product, but there shouldn't be this many obvious issues posted on a forum that the vast majority of car owners have never even heard of.

All of this is rather unfortunate... their employ a number of people in my home state, and I want them to succeed. I just can't trust their products right now, and they aren't showing the level of concern I think they should be showing about this.

Because I'm old, stubborn and ...old and stubborn. I grew up with 3K OCIs and I will die with 3K OCIs because I do NOT buy into any hype about better oil, better this, better that, blah blah blah. Engines are stupid, and for the price of 5Q of 5W30 (dino, no synthetics in my 130K, always Dino-lubricated engine) and a filter, be it P-Classic (wish I'ld known before I bought the two I just bought) or Napa Gold, is a cheap way to keep the engine innards as clean as possible.

You spent 25-75K for a vehicle and you're going to quibble about OCI? You're doin' it wrong.

If you're using Silvers, you might as well use Puros or Frams. The Gold is the lowest-level Napa I'd buy.

Times have changed and oil technology has greatly improved even dino oil in specified applications (non turbo) can last easily to 7500 miles.

You are wasting your money, oil, and your time.
