Just a thought about these filter tears...

I think years ago people didn't cut open oil filters the way freaks like us do today. I would imagine 20 years ago there were filters that had holes and tears as well as all kinds of defects but no one knew because no one cut open filters.

+1
I never cut an oil filter open in my entire life before coming to BITOG.

You buy cheap - you get cheap, period end of story.
The best built "cheaper" filter I'll purchase is the Motorcraft filters, the rest, they can stay on the shelf they were placed on.

Truth in that....

When I purchased a Bosch 3330 for $5-$6 and Made in the USA, there was an assumption of quality. And this filter has identical internals to the Purolators with problems - so that "cheap" generalization does not apply here.

Side note: this past winter, I had many cold starts that sounded like dry valve rattle starts. That was a P1, and was on for a year's OCI. I've never heard that ever before (or since I changed the filter again in March) on my CR-V.

What should we be using now in the $6-7 range?

Fram Tough Guard is what I'm switching to myself.

I am also switching to a Fram filters. I will use a Tough Guard on my wife's Nissan Rogue and an Extra Guard on my Dakota. Both filters should do just fine without much worry about any internal failures.

Mobil 1 and Fram Ultra filters for me.

Funny stuff, all the people who were pimping Purolator two years ago, are now jumping ship to Fram TG. After Fram had some notable failures on their cheaper filters. I suspect after a noted few failures of TG, many will be jumping to the next hot pick up, 18 months from now. lol

^^^ Of course, people jump ship to things that are better at the time. Who's gonna keep using something knowing it's a bad product just because they are "brand loyal".

I'm sure when Purolator lovers know the product is quality again, then they might go back. People do what makes them comfortable and feel good ... always have, always will.

You forgot to mention they were feeling good early on because the filters were cheap. Now a number of media failures later, cheap isn't so good.

And hey, where are all those two OCI's per filter guys? LMAO.

Funny stuff you have to admit Z, you spend more time here than anyone.

I have been using Denso oil filters for two years after using the OEM Toyota filter also made by Denso. Have never seen a tear or any defect after six months in service. I think the Denso oil filter is probably the best filter on the market. Just my opinion though. I'm not trying to start anything. Regards

From what I've seen, the Denso filters are pretty nice. I just wish they were actually somewhat available up here.

When you say "probably the best", and the only criteria you have is that you seen no tears, then you have started something. ... Can't make statements without at least some ISO 4548-12 test data to back up filtering performance and dirt holding ability. THEN at least we have some germ of truth backing up statements. .... Based on that testing, combined with media area observations and company engineering, I think Fram ToughGuard oil filters are about the best one can do, filtering and dirt-holding. Mobil1 Ext Perf oil filters right there, maybe on the same production line now. NAPA Gold probably right there too, less evidence though.

I really think that the non-Ecore ACDelcos are pretty solid also. I recently cut one open to compare to a Wix and was actually more satisfied with the Delco.

Im not entirely convinced that the cold winter is the primary cause of the tears. I just opened up a Bosch Premium used in 10C+ summer weather and noticed a tear. Opened up two Purolator Classics that were used in the winter...same tear but larger. Winter might help make the tear worse, but not the sole contributor to failure.

It's concerning that each Purolator product that Ive opened has shown signs of filter media damage!

Honestly, I would think the failure rate for Purolator has to be pretty high! Gotta be like 75% or more!

Motorcraft. Built like a tank, solid, thick, evenly-spaced filter media. Cheap and available nearly everywhere.

I've thought many times of switching to Fram Ultra, but my FL820s have always delivered, so I can't see changing any time soon.
