Just a thought about these filter tears...

I've really starting to notice the tears in filters lately. And it seems to be coming from all brands now...and becoming a more common problem.

So it makes me wonder...could the extreme winter that we had be a major cause of this? In honesty, we've put our cars though a pretty winter this year.

I can't see all these companies just making bad rounds of filters....didn't see this kind of problem during the summer!

Maybe getting hot/warm and cold, the pressure-who knows?

Just throwing out random thoughts...so don't beat me please!

Wondering what you guys think....

Is there any chance that the higher oil pressure of the modern engines, compared to years back, would be causing tears? Probably not huh? Do you suppose they always did ocasionaly but people wern't checking them as dilegently as now??

The winter could have been part of the reason, but it's Purolator and Purolator made brands that show the media tearing issue. If it was just from a cold winter, then Frams, NAPA, WIX, Mobil 1, etc would be failing too, but they are not.

If you have been keeping up with the whole Purolator tearing issue, you would see that wide pleat spacing and large V-spread at the ends of the pleats is what seems to be the biggest common factor in the tearing cause.

Bosch, Fram been threads with issues too....whether tears or holes, they are happening...and get the feeling there will be more....

Though I'm starting to question Puro's QC....

I was comparing cartridge filters ( Puro classic and Driveworks..made by Puro), and the made in china driveworks media is way better than the classics....

That has me wondering if that was a recent running change, or the weather exposed the flaw?

Bosch is made in the same factory as the Purolators, and the Purolator "made for" brands.

One Fram Ultra had a 1 mm dia hole in the media (a fluke IMO) ... not the same thing as dozens of reported media tears in Purolator and Purolator made filter, all with the same exact media tearing failure mode.

The weather should be part of the design and testing.

Might it have contributed to the problem given a design flaw? Maybe, probably, but it's the design flaw that needs to be fixed not the weather.

The only other thought I had was whether bypass settings are not low enough. However, I haven't seen one Purolator filter with wide v pleats that has not torn.

^^^ If the pleats were spaced and V-spread correctly they could take all the abuse any car in any weather could give them. We see Purolators posted here with less spread out pleats and way less V-spread and they don't ever show media tears.

My guess is that Purolator filters made in the next month or two and beyond will most likely have noticeably better pleat spacing and V-spread near the seam. If not, then expect this problem to keep happening.

One country. CHINA

Not sure what you mean, but the Purolators that are tearing are not made in China.

Hello, My thought on the subject is that a batch of filtering media was made poorly for whatever reason.
Obviously I think a cheap paper was called for by the industry to save a few cents per filter.
Does anybody think speccing shoddy materials is "new".

This media rips at folds because it's cheap. Also, fibers of it separate so the edges pull away from the glued ends.

A while back I thought a bad batch of glue was the cause of the edges letting go. I've abandoned that idea in favor of cheap media separating.

To be frank, there's little we (BITOGers) can do to filtering media but look at it. Perhaps changing oil and filters 'prematurely' is the cheapest insurance against this chink in our armor. Kira

The Bosch, Mann, and Purolator filters that are coming from the Fayetteville, N.C., plant seem to be the problem. It's not a 'Made in China' issue,, it's a Purolator issue. Their quality is pathetic and is probably what lead to their financial troubles that ultimately brought Bosch and Mann-Hummel to partner with them. As of 2013 their official name is Mann+Hummel Purolator filters LLC.

Quoted from their web site: "The German filtration expert MANN+HUMMEL and Bosch ran the joint venture for more than six years in a very productive partnership. While MANN+HUMMEL managed the Original Equipment (OE) business, Bosch took care of customers in the Independent Aftermarket (IAM). IAM customers that have been served by Bosch during the joint venture will be transitioned to MANN+HUMMEL Purolator Filters LLC. A seamless customer service is being guaranteed."

It would appear that the production of the cheapo Purolator filters isn't seamless because that's where the filters are splitting. I won't buy Bosch or Mann that are made at this facility either.

But I LOVE the grippy material on my P1 filters!

Side note: this past winter, I had many cold starts that sounded like dry valve rattle starts. That was a P1, and was on for a year's OCI. I've never heard that ever before (or since I changed the filter again in March) on my CR-V.

What should we be using now in the $6-7 range?

Wix/NAPA Gold, Fram TG, or cough up a couple extra $ for an Ultra.

I hope they're listening, for their sake. I have a feeling the problem will continue for a while longer though.

Fram Tough Guard! Excellent filters, and a few have said they are very quiet on start up.

My next oil changes on my accord and truck will both have TG Fram filters. Even though I've got a stash of P1 and Mann filters...
