It comes standard with sport/touring-like performance...

I looked at the Goldwing, BMW GTL and the Harley Limited. Goldwing was the most expense and Limited was the cheapest. Wife hated the BMW rear seat position. We will be gone 2 or 3 weeks when we take trips. Keeping her happy is number one. I let her decide between the Goldwing and the Limited. We got the Limited. 15k miles and no problems. I will put a rear tire on before we leave for Canada in June.

Not that I have anything against Harley's, having owned an FLHTCUI myself, but the CVO versions of the Electra Glide and Road Glide Ultra are even heavier than the Goldwing.

This doesn't really answer the question, but to me a motorcycle has to be light, lean, and quick. Japanese bikes have always had that. HDs and other heavyweights do absolutely nothing for me viscerally. I still miss that twangy, buzzy sound of a two-stroker wound up to the red line and launching in a cloud of blue smoke. My first bike was a Yamaha 180 that could do about 80mph flat out with me laying on the tank. I bought it for $200. To me that's what motorcycles are all about.

And then they had the "Good Things Happen on a Honda" ad blitz.

And there were certainly individual dealer gimmick promotions by Honda dealers like this on display at the National Motorcycle Museum. Was a cheap stunt then, but imagine what that Panhead would be worth today.

Here are some of the "You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda" ads from TV. As you can see they definately tried to open the idea of motorcycle ownership to a whole new segment of the American populace. These were not your typical Brit and Harley shoppers/riders.

If I read the site correctly, the "base" Wing actually doesn't have ABS standard. A $24,000 touring bike without ABS in 2016? Seriously, Honda?!

No, but the rear air suspension should!

Compare the top of the line Goldwing to the same CVO...the Honda's better equipped for more than $10K less...

I don't know what to think about ABS on bikes...my Rocket has it and I don't see any real benefit to it...I've been riding for 45 years without it and I've gotten along just fine...

A Goldwing is a class by itself, its like a tour bus. Harley does not produce a Goldwing type bike. Just the same as Honda does not produce heavy weight 1700cc v-twin cruisers like Harley except for the Goldwing with its 6 cylinder engine their are no other options. They gave up that market vtwin market, unable to compete.

Yes, true, you could compare both top of the line models Harley to Honda Goldwing but they are still two very different bikes. No question about it, I am not knocking Goldwings in any way, IF that is the right bike for the buyer, same as if the heavyweight Harley is for that buyer but two very different bikes, two different riders.

One thing the Goldwings do not have is a six speed transmission. Not a big deal but if you read the Goldwing forums there are a certain number of people who do wish for that 6th gear, interstate riders who do GPS speeds of 75 to 80 do wish for the 6th, they complain about MPG going into the toilet and you will see comments about slowing down more to prevent the MPG issue.

One other thing, its not fair to compare the price of a custom (CVO) Harley bike to a Production Goldwing bike. CVO bikes come with custom paint, wheels, hardware etc. You would simply compare non custom Harley bikes the same as non custom Goldwings.

People who drive cars have gotten along without ABS too but the fact is, I think by now standard on all cars and trucks, ABS is a safety feature that can make my 750 LB Road King stop on a dime without me thinking and enabling me to focus on the road.

Deer jumps out in front of you, slam on the brakes, let the bikes computer stop the bike while you steer around it, no wheel lock up, no rear tire sliding out from you, just a rock solid stop.

Cars on the interstate stop suddenly, dead stop, hit your brakes and your bike stops with just a chirp from your wheels, no skidding, nothing. You can stop just as fast as the cars with ABS do in front of you.

Go on youtube and watch a few of the videos of motorcycles braking with ABS VS non ABS, and you might change your mind. Especially on wet roads!
