I've never pulled apart a dry engine

Have said it many times that I've never pulled apart an engine wihtout getting covered in oil.

Pulled piston assemblies out of a BMW 6 (well 5, as one was out the side), that had been sitting in a shed for 2 years, and the piston assemblies still held a LOT of messy oil.

Stumbled across this yesterday.

So (whatever the test was), there was a rapid drain off, but still retention after 48 hours, comparable to 24.

Is a "dry" start still wet ?

How does stop start gell with this (at least in the piston world) ?

Great question. In my world it would be something I'd want to disable ASAP.

Start/stop is NEVER going to cause lubrication-related problems because the engine isn't off long enough for any appreciable drain-back. What it will cause is a)short starter motor life and b) driver irritation (if the driver is me, anyway...)

Those are the exact reasons why I'd want to disable it. I'll pay the extra few dollars a week for the gas. The lube running off the engine parts is not a major concern to me, it's everything else about it.

I'm sure that the run/stop vehicles do not have run of the mill starters. It will probably be standard within 5-10 years.

They are pretty common in Europe now. Even on cheaper econoboxes.

I have no doubt that you've opened up more engines than I have, but you make an excellent point.
The oil clings to all surfaces. It never completely runs off.
An engine is an oil environment. It doesn't dry up internally over any interval short of a number of decades.

My experience exactly. I can go out to my garage and pull the valve cover off my old 302 and it is still an oily experience under there even though it hasn't run in probably 5 years now.

I test drove an F150 with the 2.7 and it had the auto start off feature....it would not turn off if the wheel was turned and if it was off it would come back on with the touch of any control....even the radio.

Where does all the dry start regurgitations come from??? Good marketing to uninformed gullible consumers?
 
Years ago, I was at a promotional dinner, and spent the evening talking to a (now ex) Castrol chemist who worked on the development of the Magnatec.

His take was that engines start, there's a film there already, the oil is cold (and therefore thick), and does a pretty decent job of protecting initially...

Then as it heats, it thins, and in addition, there's a period when everything's not properly expanded and clearanced, and the additives haven't kicked in...the wear is during warm-up phase, not the "start" per se.

Sequence IVA duplicates that phase...the engine is running, it's oiled, but the temperatures are held at a point that the additives aren't functional.

Yep, as a result of that evening, I DO use magnatec when it suits my purposes.
