It's impossible to enjoy driving these days.

I often ignore them and it drives my wife nuts. She says "You are in the fast lane..." I state "Yup, and I am driving faster than the posted speed limit...and really, there is no such thing as a "fast lane" which allows exceeding the speed limit."
Slower vehicles (which are moving slower than the posted max speed limit) are supposed to stay to the right, so my place, driving at or slightly above the max, is in either lane.

Another scenario is a tailgater that expects me to get out of their way, but my move results in having to significantly speed up or slow down, which degrades my fuel economy.

They should have to waste their fuel if they want to pass.

Apparently you've never heard the term "stay right except when passing". The left lane is not a crusing lane, it's a passing lane for faster moving traffic. Not moving into the right lane when someone comes up from behind and wants to pass you is just plain rude.

Where, in the USA, is passing on the right illegal? It's not illegal in Virginia.

That also means you have right-of-way when you move in from the left

Not in Virginia. If you make a lane change, the traffic in the lane you are changing into has the right-of-way.

I don't know about passing on the right being illegal, but I do know in some states you can be ticketed for left lane camping.

It is a documented fact that many states do not follow there own guidelines for speed limits.

Now add to that the incredible pressure being put on law enforcement to collect more fines.

Expect more tickets. And a better chance of getting off in court.

That said, if a person is polite, I usually ease over to let them through.

One of the more annoying and recent developments are tailgaters who use you as a pace car because they are talking on the phone or texting. They are so distracted that they can't maintain an even speed, so you prevent them from driving too fast. When you move out of the way they zip right up to the next car...

I'd like to see a document that describes the left lane as you have. Why? Because I think you have it wrong and your wife is at least CLOSER to the law.

Does your state have the rules of the road in a PDF format? If so, why not down load it and read the section on lane usage and report back to us.

I think you'll find your wife is closer to what your rules of the road describe.

Then, apologize to your wife and take her somewhere nice to show your appreciation for sharing her superior wisdom on this topic.

I'd like to read the law. Still, it is pretty clear: "However, slower moving vehicles should always stay in the lane farthest to the right except when preparing to make a left turn."

Regardless of your speed, if someone "catches" you, you are a slower moving vehicle.

Camping in the left lane is illegal in Texas. And someone merging from left to right has the right of way. Passing on the right is illegal in Germany, at least; I don't know of any US states where it is illegal, which is really too bad.

Put me in the "you are rude to camp in the left lane and expect faster traffic to pass you on the right" camp.

Oh, and look at page 94:

"On a two-lane freeway, drive in the right lane except
when passing, exiting to the left, allowing another
vehicle to merge onto the freeway, when the lanes are
fully occupied with heavily congested traffic, or when
emergency vehicles or construction workers are on the
shoulder."

"On a freeway with three or more lanes of travel in the
same direction, you may drive in any lane, however, if
driving at or near the minimum speed limit, drivers should
stay in the lane with the slower moving traffic."

Should we safely assume you'll change your behavior now?

Drivers like you are one of the biggest problems...you folks create road rage in other drivers. Keep right and out of the way is a simple rule that works and the Germans follow it like religion.

Left lane campers are the primary reason I wish I had RPGs mounted in the grill...

Loogie, I'm sorry, even as an Admin here, there's no other way to say it -- you are a mow-ron. You are right, there is no such thing as a "fast lane". But there sure is a PASSING LANE. That's the lane on the LEFT. What's so hard about that???? So exactly who deputized you to "prevent them from driving too fast"???? You are a danger to yourself, your family, and everyone else out there on the road. Sooner or later, and I certainly hope it's not with your kids on board, you're going to find yourself trying to slow down some convicted felon who doesn't give a &@^^ what happens. When the bullets are ripping through your passenger compartment, I wonder whether you'll be feeling so sanctimonious.

Gee, where's Pitzel when you need to beat up on him...

No, he won't change his behavior. He's a passive-aggressive -- ummmm -- "orifice"... He derives perverse satisfaction from imposing his will (or feeling like he's imposing his will) on others. He will continue to engage in this pattern of behavior until either the law forces him to stop, or he resolves the primal deficiencies in his character that drive him to do this sort of thing to others (who've never done anything to him...).

I'm sorry -- one more thing. No you're not "polite". The driving behavior you admit to engaging in is not only NOT even close to polite, it's actually the height of road rudeness. . .

I think there are "Slower Traffic Keeps Right" signs on California Interstate Highway. This to me means the left lane is for passing only and merging back to right lane as soon as it is safe to do so.

I personally drive fairly fast on highways when it is safe to do so, even if I drive at speed up to 90-100 MPH or faster on I-15 to/from Vegas, I always merged to right lane as soon as I passed a car on right lane, even if the opening on the right is fairly short such that I would have to go back to left lane in 15-20 seconds. If there was no car on both lanes and I was doing 100+ MPH, I would stay on right lane and only changed to left lane when I approach a car on the right.

I think that says it all...

If you slow guys want to drive under the speed limit, mind your own business, and stay in the right lane.
I have a big car payment, big insurance bill and I pay taxes to use the road.
If I choose to drive over the speed limit,as my time is valuable,it shouldn't concern you.
Stay out of my way PLEASE!

My big insurance bill is impacted by those fools out there on our highways breaking the laws amd causing accidents and death. Not only by speed, but by many other distractions and bad behavior.

What is so hard about obeying the laws of the road, or do we all just get to pick and chose which laws to obey. Chaos reigns on our highways and this is brought about by unlawful behavior.

Chaos=meaning a state lacking order or predictability.

When I drive I want to get from point A to point B in the minimum time. Nothing bugs me more than some passive aggressive jerk in the left lane trying to prove a point. We have some beautiful drives in Arkansas but if you want to enjoy the scenery get off the freeway and out of my way.
